DURHAM, N.C. - Junior Michael Videira was named to the National Team of the Week by College Soccer News after leading Duke on both ends of the field this past week in three games. The Blue Devils notched their second straight ACC Tournament title, and Videira played a big role, scoring one goal and directing the offense from the center midfield position. It was the second time this season that Videira was named to CSN's National Team of the Week, with the first awarding coming on Aug. 28.
Videira, a native of Milford, Mass., did not put up big numbers in victories over N.C. State, Maryland, and Wake Forest, but played as team "quarterback" as he has all season long, pushing forward and dropping back as needed for the Blue Devils. Videira took 11 shots in three games, with three of those shots going on goal. He now has six goals and six assists, and has started in all 17 games he has been able to play in.
The goal for Videira came in the N.C. State game in the 58th minute. A short Duke corner kick on the left side of the field was received by junior midfielder Spencer Wadsworth, who played the ball back a few yards to senior captain/defender Kyle Helton. Helton played a cross into the box that Videira headed skillfully into the back of the net. That score put the Blue Devils up 2-1, and turned out to be the game winner. Videira was named ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player on Sunday for his efforts in the tournament.
Videira was named a Preseason First Team All-America by College Soccer News and Soccer America. He was also among 25 players named to the preseason Hermann Trophy Watch List, and was named to the All-ACC First Team last week. It is the third year in as many played for Videira that he was named to an All-ACC team. Furthermore, Videira was awarded for his academic efforts by being named ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-America District first team. All of this has happened despite Videira missing three games due to injury late in the season.
Duke's next match with be on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 7:00 p.m. in the second round of the NCAA Men's College Cup. The Blue Devils will face the winner of the Adelphi-Brown game being played this weekend, and Duke will have home field advantage throughout the tournament until the Final Four in St. Louis on Dec. 1 and 3. Duke will look to avenge its second round exit last year at the hands of Creighton.
