Duke Coach John Rennie
Thoughts on the game tonight...
“I'm very happy with the results. I think we beat a real good defensive team in Brown. Strong, really good in the air, very good athletes. It was hard to get good scoring chances. They pushed everyone forward in the end. Got a lot of the play there towards the end in terms of possession, but goals are what counts. Obviously, we were very happy to take a 2-0 lead. Got two great goals from these two guys. For the first game after being off ten days, I was very happy.”
On the team defense...
“That's our third shutout in a row. We've given up one goal in our last four games against very good teams. Obviously, we can attribute it to the team defense. Defense is a team thing, and we've been playing very good defense in the last half of the season in particular, and we knew we had to tonight.”
On the injury to Chris Loftus...
“He and Spencer Wadsworth both have hamstring pulls. Spencer played some tonight, maybe thirty minutes total. And you could see he is not really game fit. He is healthy and cleared to play. He practiced for a couple days, but it takes a while to come back. Loftus is another week or ten days behind Spencer. We certainly will not have Chris Loftus back this Sunday. If we are fortunate enough to be playing the following Sunday, that is our best case scenario. Paul Dudley did an outstanding job tonight playing the same role that Loftus does for us. And considering Paul had major surgery at the end of last season on his ankle and has really taken a long time to recover. So he is really not fit and had not played a whole lot, but he was terrific tonight.”
On getting so many scoring chances in the first half...
“They were pushed up high and there was a lot of room behind them to play into.”
Junior midfielder Michael Videira
On the goal he scored......
“Well, we've been practicing a lot, working on our free kicks and corner kicks and working a lot on recycling our runs. So, it came back to (Tim) Jepson, and everyone started moving around trying to get to the back post to play off the ball. I got around everyone else and was able to bring it down.”
On the effects of the second goal on Brown...
“We knew they were going to come out really hard in the second half and to get that second goal pretty early was pretty good just to knock them down a little bit.”
On last year's second round NCAA tournament loss to Creighton...
“We don't really talk about it, but we don't forget about it.”
Sophomore forward Mike Grella
On getting ready for the Tournament...
“Right after the ACC, its three games in five days so we've taken it pretty easy after that. I think we've just been going over a lot of general things and getting back into it slowly with the whole team. So things like recycling the run, offense, defense, real game situations and stuff like that to help us to get through the NCAAs.”
On getting so many scoring chances in the first half...
“I think when the ball goes up into the forwards and comes back to Videira or one of the other midfielders and they back step, it's easy to get behind a lot of teams if you get the timing right.”
On the effects of the second goal on Brown...
“I think it definitely took a lot out of them. When you get deep into the second half, it just demoralizes them when you get down 2-0. You're away from home, playing the number one seed so I am sure it took a lot out of them.”
