WINDERMERE, FLA. -- Freshman Adam Long fired a three-over 75 on Tuesday in the final round of the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational to finish tied for 10th overall with a five-over 221 (75-71-75). The 10th place showing was his second top 10 in three events this fall. As a team, the Blue Devils struggled in the final round, posting a score of 314 (+26) to close the event in 13th place with a three-round total of +41 (296-295-314=905).
Long bogeyed his first hole on Tuesday and was four-over through six holes before carding an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole. Following a bogey on No. 8, he settled in to post eight pars, one birdie and a bogey over the final 10 holes.
Texas pulled away from the 18-team field in the final round of the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational to earn its first team title of the fall season. The Longhorns opened the final round with just a one-shot lead on Oklahoma State at the Isleworth Golf & Country Club, but by the end of the day the Texas lead turned into a 12-stroke victory over runner-up Florida.
Texas finished with a 297 (+9) to give the team a three-round total of 876 (+12). The Gators jumped a spot in the team standings from day two following a 302 (+14) to place second. Texas A&M posted the low round of the day with a 291 (+3) to vault into third after starting the day in 16th. Oklahoma State wound up fourth in the team standings after registering a 312 (+24).
The Georgia Bulldogs rounded out the top five and were led by sophomore Brian Harman, who captured medalist honors with a three-day total of 216 (E). Harman's third-round score of 75 (+3) was his only round over par at the tournament after posting scores of 70 (-2) and 71 (-1) in the first and second rounds, respectively.
Harman held off Billy Horschel of Florida and Wake Forest's Dustin Groves as that duo finished tied for runner-up with respective scores of 217 (+1). Horschel, who fired a final round of one-under, 71, was one of just four players to break par on the last day and almost holed out a chip on the 18th green to force a playoff. Texas A&M junior Robert Gates fired the lowest third-round score with a 68 (-4) to finish in a tie for 10th.
Texas unseated the Bulldogs who had won the ICI in its first two years of existence. The unranked Longhorns surprised a field that featured 12 ranked teams. Their previous top finish of the season was a third-place showing at the Jerry Pate Invitational Oct. 9-10.
Tuesday's conditions were less than ideal on Tuesday as the Orlando area had a record low temperature of 50 degrees. Sunday's opening round was played in a record high 91 degrees. In addition to the trying weather conditions the Isleworth course played extremely difficult with only two holes playing under par Tuesday, No. 7 (-0.05) and No. 13 (-0.27).
Junior Michael Schachner capped of his tournament with an seven-over 79 in the final round. Schachner finished the event tied for 35th at 11-over par (75-73-79=227). Jake Grodzinsky placed 45th after shooting an eight-over 80 on Tuesday. Michael Quagliano also shot an 80 in the final round and finished tied for 49th at 13-over (73-76-80=229). Sophomore Clark Klaasen shot a 10-over 82 in the closing round to tie for 77th overall at 21-over.
