FORT WORTH, TEXAS -- Duke opened the first round of the Callaway Collegiate Match Play at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas on Sunday with a 3-1-1 win over eigth-seeded UNLV. The Blue Devils, the ninth seed in the event, got wins from Clark Klaasen, Michael Quagliano and Michael Schachner, while freshman Adam Long halved his match in the opening round. Duke nearly upset top-seed Florida in the second round, tying the Gators 2-2-1 and losing the tiebreaker 30-28 (holes won). Quagliano and Schachner carded victories in the Florida match, while freshman Jeff Edelman halved his match.
In the opening round, QUagliano fell behind UNLV's C.J. Gatto early in his match before battling back for a 2 and 1 victory. After the two players split the opening two holes (No. 3 & No. 4), Gatto went on to post wins at No. 5, No. 7 and No. 3 to take a 3-up advantage. Quagliano came back with win on No. 9, No. 13 and No. 14 to bring the match to all-square. Quagliano and Gatto matched scores over the next three holes before Quagliano took control of the match with a birdie on the par-4 18th hole. The Ardsley, N.Y., native went on the win hole No. 1 with a bogey to secure the 2 and 1 victory.
Klaasen was strong throughout his opening round match en route to a 5 and 4 win over Eddie Olson. The match was all-square through eight holes before Klaasen posted four straight wins to go 4-up with six holes remaining. Schachner controlled his match versus UNLV's Jarred Texter, winning the second hole to take a 1-up lead that he would not relinquish. Schachner stretched his lead to 3-up on two separate occassions and closed the match with a 2 and 1 victory.
Long, a freshman from St. Louis, Mo., halved his match with the Runnin' Rebels' Matt Kinsinger. With the match all square through four holes, Kinsinger took a one-up lead on No. 9. Long evened the match with a par on the par-4 12th and took a two-up lead with wins on No. 14 and No. 15. He maintained his two-up lead through No. 17 before Kinsinger carded wins on No. 18 and No. 1 to square the match. Long responded with a par on No. 2 to take a one-up lead into the final hole. On the par-3 third hole, Kinsinger came away with a par to win the hole and halve the match. Senior Jake Grodzinsky fell 4 and 2 to Ryan Keeney in the Blue Devils only loss of the opening round match.
In the second round, Quagliano dominated his match versus Florida's Jessie Mudd, posting a 4 and 3 win. With the match at all-square through six holes, Quagliano posted four straight wins to take command of the match. He capped off his victory with a birdie on the par-4 second hole. Schachner scored a 1-up victory over Tyson Alexander in a match that the Duke junior never trailed. The Libertyville, Ill., native sank a birdie putt on the final hole to clinch the victory.
Edelman, a Southlake, Texas, native, lost the opening hole in his match with Toby Ragland but responded with wins on four on the next five holes to take a 3-up lead. He maintained the lead through the next nine holes before Ragland got hot and won the final three holes to halve the match.
Long fell 3 and 2 to Billy Horschel and Klaasen fell 3 and 1 to Manuel Villegas in the other second round matches. Florida advanced in the tournament by virtue of 30 holes won in the five matches. The Blue Devils won 28 holes. Duke will now face ACC rival Clemson in the consolation bracket. Clemson advanced to the second round with a 30-28 tiebreaker win over Washington, before falling to Oklahoma State, 5-0, in the second round.
