WINDERMERE, FLA. -- The Duke men's golf team fired a seven-over 295 on Monday in the second round of the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational to move into a tie for sixth place overall. Freshman Adam Long battled strong winds and came through with the top round of the day for the Blue Devils with a one-under 71 (35-36). Duke's five golfers got off to a slow start and were sitting at 12-over (eighth-over in the team scoring) through the first six holes before turning things around on the par-5 seventh hole. The Blue Devils entered No. 7 with just three birdies on the day but responded by carding four birdies on No. 7.. Duke played the remaining 12 holes at one-under to close the day tied for sixth overall with a two-day score of 591 (+15).
Long opened up action on Monday with five straight pars before carding a bogey on No. 6. The St. Louis, Mo., native finished the front side birdie-par-birdie to make the turn at one-under. Following a bogey on No. 10, Long posted seven pars and a birdie on the par-5 13th hole for his second under-par round of the fall season. Long, who now has a team-low 72.1 stroke average, enters Tuesday's final round tied for 12th at two-over (146).
Junior Michael Schachner finished at one-over on the day and is now tied for 33rd with a four-over 148. Schachner began play with two bogeys through the first six holes before recording his first birdie on the par-5 7th hole. He went on to birdie the par-3 11th hole to get back to even-par but suffered a bogey on No. 12 and a double-bogey on No. 13 to move to three-over. The Libertyville, Ill., native countered with three pars and birdies on No. 14 and No. 17 to get back to one-over.
Senior Jake Grodzinsky parred the first hole before stumbling to a triple-bogey six on his second hole of the day. The Cornville, Ariz., native battled back with birdies on No. 4 and No. 7 before closing double-bogey-bogey for a five-over 41 on the front nine. He picked up his play at the turn to close with seven pars and two birdies to complete the round with a three-over 75. Grodzinsky is four-over through two rounds and also tied for 33rd overall.
Junior Michael Quagliano birdied No.1 on Monday before going five-over on the next three holes. He responded with five pars to make the turn with a four-over 40. Following a bogey on No. 10, Quagliano got hot and birdied Nos. 11, 13 and 15 to get back to two-over on the day. Bogeys on No. 16 and No. 17 moved him back to four-over for the round and five-over for the tournament. He is currently tied for 396h overall. Sophomore Clark Klaasen also shot a four-over 76 in the second round for the Blue Devils. He had three birdies, nine pars, three bogeys and three double-bogeys on the day and is tied for 73rd at 11-over.
Texas shot a three-under 285 on Monday to take the tournament lead with a three-over 579. Oklahoma State is one shot back at 580 (+4) with Florida seven shots off the pace at 10-over par. Clemson is fourth overall with a two-round score of 588 (+12) while Kentucky is fifth with a 590. Duke, Georgia and Tennessee are tied for sixth at +15 (591) with North Carolina (+17) and Florida State (+18) rounding out the top 10.
Florida's Toby Ragland fired a one-under 71 to retain the individual lead with a four-under 140 through two rounds. Georgia's Brian Harman (Georgia) is one shot back after also shooting a one-under 71. Wake Forest's Dustin Groves fired a five-under 67 on Monday to move up 36 spots into third at two-under (142). Tyler Leon (Oklahoma State) and Kevin Schultz (Texas) are tied for fifth overall at one-under (143).
The Blue Devils open play on Monday at 8:45 a.m. at Isleworth and will be paired with Clemson and Kentucky. Isleworth, consistently ranked the longest and toughest course in the state by the Florida State Golf Association (FSGA), measures 7,544 yards with a slope of 142 and a rating of 77.5.
