WINDERMERE, FLA. -- The Duke men's golf team is tied for eighth overall after shooting an eight-over 296 as a team in the opening round of the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational on Sunday. The Blue Devils, who are five shots back of tournament leader Georgia (+3, 291), were paced by senior Jake Grodzinsky and junior Michael Quagliano. Both players shot one-over 73s on Sunday as only 11 players shot under-par in the opening round.
With Duke opening play on the back nine, Grodzinsky got off to a slow start with four straight bogeys beginning on No. 12. Following a four-over 40 on the backside, the Cornville, Ariz., native recorded four birdies and just one bogey on the front nine for a three-under 33. Grodzinsky is currently tied for 19th at one-over 73.
Quagliano opened with a two-over 38 on the back nine, before carding birdies on three straight holes (Nos. 2, 3, 4) to move to one-under through 13 holes. Following his birdie string, he carded four pars in a row before suffering a double-bogey on the final hole. Quagliano played the par-3s at one-under and the par-5s at two-under on Sunday. He is also tied for 19th at one-over (73).
Freshman Adam Long and junior Michael Schachner each shot three-over 75s in the opening round and are tied for 39th overall. Long shot 39-36=75 and is tied for second (with teammates Jake Grodzinsky and Michael Quagliano) in the tournament field with four birdies. Schachner was the lone Blue Devil to shoot even-par on the back nine as he carded two birdies, five pars and two bogeys en route to a 36. The Libertyville, Ill., native followed up with a three-over 39 on the front side with bogeys on No. 2, No. 5 and No. 8.
The fifth member of the Duke lineup, Clark Klaasen played the par-3s at one-under on Sunday but struggled otherwise en route to a seven-over 79 (41-38). Klaasen will enter tomorrow's second round action tied for 75th overall. The Blue Devils open play on Monday at 8:00 a.m. at Isleworth and will be paired with Arizona and North Carolina. Isleworth, consistently ranked the longest and toughest course in the state by the Florida State Golf Association (FSGA), measures 7,544 yards with a slope of 142 and a rating of 77.5.
Georgia holds the first round lead after firing a three-over 291, while South Carolina is one shot back. After Tennessee (+5, 293) in the third spot, Texas, Oklahoma State and Florida are tied for fourth at six-over. Arizona is seventh at seven-over, followed by Duke and North Carolina tied for eighth and Clemson, Florida State and Georgia State tied for 10th at nine-over.
Florida's Toby Ragland is the first round leader at three-under (69) with Brian Harman (Georgia), Martin Piller (Texas A&M), Hudson Swafford (Georgia), Cameron Tringale (Georgia Tech) and Manuel Villegas (Florida) tied for second at two-under (70).
