CORAL GABLES, Fla. ? Freshman Rachael Moss paced the Duke offense with a team-high 15 kills as the Blue Devils won their 10th straight ACC match with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-20, 30-28) sweep over Miami on Friday night at Knight Sports Complex. The Blue Devils improve to 17-2 overall and 10-0 in the ACC while the Hurricanes fall to 7-13 and 4-7, respectively.
Dating back to last year, Duke is 27-5 in its last 32 ACC matches.
After Duke and Miami traded the first 18 points of the match, the Blue Devils used a 4-0 run to take a 13-9 lead. The Hurricanes battled back to cut Duke's lead to one point on three occasions midway through the game and after Miami closed the gap to one at 21-20, the Blue Devils went on a 9-2 run to take game one, 30-22. Duke hit .432 in the opening game as Moss led the way with five kills and a .625 hitting percentage. Senior Tealle Hunkus, junior Carrie DeMange and sophomore Sue Carls added four kills apiece in game one.
The Blue Devils opened game two with a 7-2 advantage but a 6-0 Miami run gave the Hurricanes an 8-7 lead. Duke responded with a 10-2 run to go ahead 17-10, forcing Miami to call their first timeout of the game. The Hurricanes would cut Duke's lead to five points at 17-12 before the Blue Devils scored 13 of the game's final 21 points to take a 2-0 lead with a 30-20 game two victory. Duke was again paced by Moss, who had seven kills and a .750 hitting percentage as the Blue Devils hit .450 as a team in the second game.
Miami controlled the tempo throughout most of game three and held a 17-13 advantage late in the game. Duke then battled back with a 7-3 run to tie the game at 20-20. The Hurricanes followed with a 3-1 run to go ahead 23-21. The Blue Devils again tied the game at 23-23 before a 4-0 run gave Duke a 27-23 advantage. Miami would cut the lead to one point at 29-28 but the Blue Devils held on for a 30-28 game three victory. Sophomore Jourdan Norman led the way for Duke in the final game, registering four kills and a .600 hitting percentage.
Moss finished with a career-high .591 hitting percentage, eight digs and four service aces in the win. Junior Ali Hausfeld guided the Duke attack with a match-high 35 assists and added four digs and a block.
Hunkus registered eight kills, four digs, four blocks and three service aces while DeMange had seven kills, seven digs and two blocks to go along with a .357 hitting percentage. Norman posted six kills and a .500 hitting percentage and had seven blocks for the Blue Devils. Carls finished with six kills and three blocks and junior Jenny Shull added six digs in the win.
The Blue Devils will return to the court on Sunday when they take on Florida State (15-5, 9-2 ACC) at 1 p.m. in Tallahassee, Fla. The Seminoles defeated Wake Forest, 3-0, earlier Friday night.
