Notre Dame, Ind. - The Duke fencing teams competed in its second duals in two days at the Notre Dame Duals on Sunday. The team traveled from State College, Pa. where they fenced at the Penn State Duals on Saturday.
The tenth-ranked men ended the day of competition with a record of 4-2. They had wins over Detroit, Wayne State, Northwestern and Lawrence. The two losses came against the top two teams in the USFCA College Fencing Coaches' Poll, Ohio State and Notre Dame. The men are now 7-6 on the season.
The saber team went 4-2 on the day. They were led by John Cornwell and Laughlin Stewart who each had six wins on the day. In epee, the men also went 4-2 with Zach Moss compiling a 7-7 overall record on the day. Nic Testerman, Theodore Lauzen and Sam Doran all had five wins for the epee team. The foil squad had three wins and three losses. Jackson McClam was the top performer with a 6-7 record.
The women's team had a record of 3-3 on the day with wins against Detroit, Wayne State and Lawrence. They came away with losses to No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 4 Ohio State and No. 7 Northwestern. The three wins now gives Duke seven on the year as they stand at 7-7 heading into their home duals.
The women's saber team posted a record of 4-2 on Sunday as two-time All-America Ibtihaj Muhammad returned from an illness to record a record of 14-3. She is now 25-3 on the season. Allison Schafer also performed well with a 9-6 mark to give her 17 wins on the weekend and 26 overall for the season. The epee also finished the day 4-2 and were led by Anne Kercsmar and Dorothy Hubbard, who each posted a record of 8-5 on the day. Leading the women's foil team to a 3-3 mark was Marilyn Tycer, who recorded 12 wins compared to just five losses.
The Blue Devils will have two weeks off before the next competition. They will host MIT, Brandeis, John's Hopkins, North Carolina, Temple and Cleveland State in the Duke Duals on Feb. 10-11.
