GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The Duke men's and women's swimming and diving teams each dropped meets to in-state rival East Carolina at the Pirates' home pool Saturday. In a race that came down to the final relay, the men's team (3-5) fell 130-113, while ECU topped Duke's women (5-5), 144-99.
“At one point the guys were down 20 or 25 points, and they really fought back hard,” said head coach Dan Colella. Going into the last relay, if we could have finished first and second, we could have won. They really did a great job, and I am very proud of their performance. The women did a good job too, but I felt like some of the performances were a little flat. With ACC's so close, we really need to focus and try to swim our best. That is what we have talked about all year.”
A Duke men's performer won each of the last four individual races, and in the 200 backstroke and 500 freestyle, three Blue Devils placed in the top four. A pair of Duke swimmers -- Kevin Arthofer and Andy Storm went one-two in the 200 breaststroke to pull close just before the final relay.
Storm (1000 and 500 freestyle), Scott Champagne (400 IM), Ryan Packer (100 freestyle), Billy Pearce (200 backstroke) and Arthofer (200 breaststroke) all notched individual wins for the men. Storm set a career-high 9:54.7 in the 1000 freestyle and bested his 2005-06 mark in the 500 freestyle by swimming a 4:48.99. Champagne also finished second in the 200 butterfly, an event he has only competed in twice as a Blue Devil.
On the women's side, Katie Ness once again pulled in double wins, claiming victories and season-best times in the 200 butterfly and backstroke. Ness swam the events, separated only by the 100 freestyle, in 2:03.11 and 2:03.99, respectively.
Jackie Rodriguez swam a 2:22.91 200 breaststroke to take first in that event and finished second in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle. In the 50 freestyle, Danielle Spearman and Julia Lewis clustered to finish second and third with Anna Rogers coming in fifth. Nora Stupp, Michelle Aristeo and Amy Brown grouped together to take the second through fourth positions in the 400 IM.
Posting personal bests for the Blue Devils were freshmen Kristin Cobb in the 1000 freestyle (10:36.38) and Kyle Barrett in the 500 freestyle (5:12.95) and sophomore Sara Reynolds in the 500 freestyle (5:34.04).
Duke concludes its 2005-06 dual-meet season with a home contest honoring this year's seniors -- Katie Harrington, Julia Lewis, Katie Ness, Billy Pearce, Andy Storm, Nora Stupp, Alison Sundberg and Stephanie Taylor -- against Clemson Saturday at 1 p.m.
