The Duke men's lacrosse team will participate in the third annual Algonquin Cup College Lacrosse Invitational on Sunday, October 9 in Hempstead, N.Y. Hofstra University will host the event that includes Duke, Hofstra, Cornell, Hobart, Stony Brook and St. John's.
Duke will meet Hobart in the opening round of the tournament at 10 a.m.
The Blue Devils return nine starters from last year's club that won an NCAA-record 17 games against three losses, captured the ACC regular season title and advanced to the national championship game. Duke's 2004 squad led the nation in scoring offense, and the six top scorers all return led by attackmen Matt Danowski (50 goals & 42 assists in 2004), Zack Greer (57 goals & 15 assists) and Dan Flannery (46 goals & 26 assists).
At midfield, two All-America picks in Matt Zash (1st Team) and Peter Lamade (2nd Team) are back along with first line member Kyle Dowd (20 goals & 11 assists). Second line midfielders Bret Thompson (15 goals & 3 assists) and Fred Krom (6 goals & 5 assists) return as well as defensive midfielders Ed Douglas (19 GBs) and Michael Ward (38 GBs).
Defensively, Duke returns All-America selections Tony McDevitt (2nd Team) and Casey Carroll (HM) along with David Evans. Long stick midfielder Nick O'Hara, who was named to the 2004 All-Final Four unit, also is back.
Pantheon International, producer and organizer of the prestigious John R. Wooden Classic and John R. Wooden Tradition college basketball invitational events, created the Algonquin Cup in 2003 to showcase the country's elite teams and conclude the sport's fall season with great fanfare. Notre Dame captured the inaugural Algonquin Cup title in 2003 in the four-team tournament that was hosted by Harvard. Last year, the Black Knights of Army defeated Hofstra in the championship game of the six-team, second annual Algonquin Cup that was held at Stony Brook.
"We are delighted to host as well as be participating in our third Algonquin Cup," Hofstra head lacrosse coach John Danowski said. "It is an exciting day of lacrosse, the student-athletes enjoy the competition and it gives the coaches the opportunity to see their teams in game-like conditions before the season begins."
