St. Louis, Mo. - #3 Duke took a 2-0 lead into halftime and added a goal in the second to come away with a 3-1 victory against #25 Saint Louis on the road at Robert R. Hermann Stadium on Saturday.
Chris Loftus gave the Blue Devils the momentum early with a goal 58 seconds into the game. The goal was his second of the season. Danny Miller sent a ball into the box and Mike Grella found Loftus for the score. Midway through the first half, Loftus put another shot on goal and Billikens goalkeeper Jeff Sackman could not hold on to the ball, leaving Spencer Wadsworth open for his first goal of the year. Duke held Saint Louis to just two shots in the first half.
The Billikens came out stronger in the second half and put some pressure on Duke. At the 57:15 mark, Danny Wynn scored his first goal of the season with the help of the Blue Devils defense. Wynn's shot deflected off the back of a Duke defenseman and snuck past sophomore goalkeeper Justin Papadakis. Later in the half Saint Louis tied the score 2-2, but had the goal taken away. Dado Hamzagic beat the defense to a ball over the top and fired the ball into the back of the net, but Hamzagic was called offsides.
The Blue Devils came right back and took a two-goal advantage in the next minute when Mike Grella beat Sackman into the far corner from just in front of the net. Wadsworth drew the defense in and sent the pass over to Grella to set him up for a one-on-one matchup. Duke would hold on from there to come away with a victory to improve to 2-0 on the season. Papadakis won his second straight start in goal, making two saves in the game.
Saint Louis drops to 1-1 on the season. The loss is only the tenth in 69 career matches at Hermann Stadium. Sackman finished the game with five saves for the loss. Hamzagic had an assist on their lone goal in the game.
Duke will begin a three game homestand on Friday when they host the Duke/adidas Classic. Joining the Blue Devils will be N.C. State, the College of Charleston and St. John's. Duke will face the College of Charleston on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and will take on St. John's at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
