Reaching the national semifinals for the second time in school history, the second-seeded Duke men's lacrosse team will take on third-seeded Maryland in the NCAA Semifinals this Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
Duke and Maryland will meet in the first semifinal at 11:30 a.m., with top-seeded Johns Hopkins taking on Virginia at 2 p.m. Both games will be aired live on ESPN2. The championship tilt, set for Monday at 12 noon, will be televised live by ESPN. The national semifinal berth is the second for the Blue Devils, who advanced to the Final Four in 1997 with tournament victories over Brown and Johns Hopkins.
This year marks the first that three teams from the same conference have advanced into the national semifinal round. In addition, this is the 15th time the ACC has sent two teams into the national semifinals (last in 2003) and two league foes have met in the title tilt once as North Carolina defeated Virginia in overtime, 10-9, to claim the 1986 championship.
In the 2005 NCAA Tournament, Duke has defeated Fairfield and Cornell on its way to the semifinals while Maryland downed Penn State and Georgetown in the opening two rounds.
"We're certainly very excited to be playing this weekend in the national semifinals against Maryland," said Duke head coach Mike Pressler, who has guided the Blue Devils to a 15-year record of 146-79. "We've had an excellent season, and we've reached another one of our goals which was to advance to play at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Now we'll go against a very, very good Maryland team for the right to play on Memorial Day for the national title."
The Blue Devils and Terrapins have split a pair of games this season, with Duke picking up a 10-8 win on March 5 in College Park and Maryland posting a 9-5 victory in the ACC Tournament title game in Baltimore on May 1. Duke and Maryland have met twice in NCAA Tournament play, with the Terrapins carding a 13-11 triumph in 1992 and the Blue Devils securing a 14-9 decision two years later.
With its win over Cornell last weekend in the NCAA Quarterfinals, Duke picked up its 16th victory of the year to match the NCAA record for wins in a season. Previously, Cornell (1976), Yale (1990) and North Carolina (1991) secured 16 wins in a campaign. Duke also has equaled the NCAA standard for win total improvement at plus-11. The Blue Devils won five games in 2004 and have pushed that total to 16 this year, matching the mark set by Towson in 2001 (+11; 3 wins in 2000 to 14 in 2001).
