Duke sophomore attackman Matt Danowski has been named one of five finalists for the Tewaaraton Trophy, an honor awarded to the top collegiate lacrosse player in the nation, announced on Thursday night by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation.
Also on the list of finalists are Brodie Merrill of Georgetown, Kyle Harrison of Johns Hopkins, Sean Morris of Massachusetts and John Walker of Army. Danowski becomes the second Duke player to be named a finalist for the prestigious honor, joining Kevin Cassese, who was a finalist in both 2002 and 2003.
The five men's and five women's finalists are invited to Washington, D.C., on June 1-2, where they will be honored at an awards ceremony at the National Geographic Museum and be treated to tours and sightseeing around the Nation's capital. The Trophy winners will be announced June 2.
A native of Farmingdale, N.Y., Danowski leads the country with 78 total points on 42 goals and 36 assists while his points per game average of 4.59 ranks third nationally. Named the 2005 ACC Player of the Year, Danowski has led the Blue Devils to a school record 15 wins this season while spearheading the nation's top offensive unit. Duke boasts three of the nation's top 10 point producers this season, Danowski, Zack Greer (64 points) and Dan Flannery (61).
Danowski's 78 total points rank as the seventh-highest single-season total in ACC history (see chart below). In 30 career games at Duke, Danowski has registered 120 points on 65 goals and 55 assists to rank 23rd on the Blue Devils' all-time scoring chart. He became just the third player in ACC history to earn the league's Rookie and Player of the Year honors, joining Virginia's Michael Watson (1994 & 1997) and Maryland's Joe Walters (2003 & 2004).
Duke is next in action on Sunday at 3 p.m. when the Blue Devils meet Cornell in the NCAA Quarterfinals in Princeton, N.J.
