BALTIMORE, Md. - Johns Hopkins' Kevin Huntley scored with 1:05 remaining in the second overtime to give the Blue Jays the 11-10 win over second-ranked Duke Friday night at a packed Homewood Field. With the win, Hopkins (8-0) extends its home win streak to 32 games and holds onto its No. 1 ranking, while Duke drops to 11-1 on the year heading into next weekend's clash with conference rival No. 3 Virginia.
Matt Danowski led the Blue Devils with three goals, while Dan Flannery and Zack Greer each netted two and Peter Lamade, Kyle Dowd and Ryan Marshall put in one apiece. In goal, Aaron Fenton stopped 13 shots in almost 67 minutes of action.
Duke opened scoring just over two minutes into the game as Lamade converted on a pass from Matt Zash, but Hopkins quickly rebounded with three-straight goals, including one from Huntley, to go up 3-1 with 7:17 to play in the first quarter. Greer opened fire less than two minutes later off a feed from Flannery to come within one before the Blue Jays rattled off two-straight to close the first quarter with a 5-2 advantage.
The Blue Devils came out strong in the second stanza, capitalizing on a Hopkins turnover with a goal from Ryan Marshall before Greer netted his second of the game to pull within one again. Huntley fired off his second tally of the night to keep the Blue Jays ahead, but Danowski came through with two goals within a span of 3:51 to tie the game up and send the teams into halftime with a 6-6 score.
Both defenses buckled down in the second half, as each team limited the other to just seven shots in the period. Flannery managed to find the back of the net, however, on an extra man opportunity at the 11:59 mark to send Duke ahead 7-6. After 4:22 of scoreless action, Flannery scored again to broaden the lead and cap off scoring for the quarter to head into the fourth installment with a 8-6 mark in favor of Duke.
Hopkins scored three straight goals to open the fourth quarter, with two coming at the hands of Duke transfer Matt Rewkowski. With Hopkins up 9-8, Dowd, a Hopkins transfer, tied the game up for Duke before Danowski's third goal of the game at the 4:36 mark gave the Blue Devils a 10-9 lead. Hopkins' Kyle Harrison scored his second goal of the game with 2:38 left in regulation to tie the score at 10-all and send the game into overtime.
After neither team scored in the first five minutes of sudden death action, the game went into double overtime where Huntley won the game for the Blue Jays with his third goal of the night with 1:05 to play.
The Blue Devils return to action Saturday, Apr. 16 as they host No. 3 Virginia (7-1, 1-0 ACC) at 3:00 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium.
