AUGUSTA, Ga. - Behind a three-day score of 228 from junior Nathan Smith, the Blue Devils finished in a tie for 10th place at the Augusta State Invitational. Duke (316-312-306--934) ended up tied with Central Florida, 28 shots off the pace set by host Augusta State, which took home the title. Chris Kirk of Georgia finished at one-over-par and earned the individual championship, played at the par-72 Forest Hills Golf Club.
Smith (75-77-76, +12) finished in a tie for 14th to pace Duke in an event that saw high scores across the board. Fellow junior Ryan Blaum was the second Blue Devil finisher, posting a 16-over-par 232 and finishing in a tie for 32nd. Sophomore Jake Grodzinsky finished in a tie for 47th with a 20-over-par 236 (79-80-77) and freshman Michael Schachner bounced back from a first-round 88 to shoot 79 and 74 on day two and finish 25-over-par. Classmate Michael Quagliano (83-80-84--247) rounded out the scorers for the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils return to action next weekend, traveling to Holly Springs, N.C. for The Intercollegiate. The event will be Duke's final tune-up before the 2005 ACC Championship.
