NEW LONDON, N.C. - The Duke men's golf team earned its spot in Blue Devil history today, taking home the ACC Championship with a four-shot victory over Georgia Tech at the par-72, 7,102-yard Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point. It was the squad's sixth ACC team championship and first since 1966. Junior Ryan Blaum led the event wire-to-wire and won the individual title. He finished 10-under-par, eight shots better than Georgia Tech's Chan Song, and became Duke's first ACC individual champion since Matt Krauss in 1999.
With the Blue Devil women also winning the ACC title and Brittany Lang taking home the individual championship, this year marks the first time the same school has won both team titles and both individual titles.
Blaum took a two-shot lead after the first round, doubled the margin to four shots after yesterday and simply blew away the rest of the field today, blistering the course for a tournament-low round of 67. There were only five sub-70 rounds in the tournament and two of them belonged to Blaum. After shooting 68 and 71 on the first two days, Blaum posted five birdies and 13 pars in the final round, en route to walking away with the hardware.
Junior Nathan Smith also bore much responsibility for Duke's success. The product of Santa Cruz, Calif. shot and even-par 72 for the second straight day after a first-round 73. He finished at one-over-par and ended up in a tie for fourth place overall.
Freshman Michael Schachner showed tremendous resiliency after putting up an 82 on day one. The rookie came back to shoot 73 on Saturday and was one of only nine players to shoot 70 or better in the final round as he finished tied for 24th at 10-over-par.
Fellow freshman Michael Quagliano also ended up at 10-over, though he took a more consistent route, firing back-to-back 75s in the first two rounds before carding a 76 on Sunday.
Sophomore Jake Grodzinsky was the fifth Duke finisher, but his final-round 73 was instrumental to Duke's title. After scores of 76 and 79 in the first two rounds, Grodzinsky finished at 12-over-par, tied for 33rd. Each of the five Blue Devils posted at least one counted round over the course of the weekend.
The two team wins for Duke give the Blue Devils two points in the race for the Carlyle Cup, an all-sports competition between Duke and North Carolina. Teh Tar Heels continue to lead the event this year, 11.5 to 9.5. The Carlyle Cup is sponsored by Carlyle & Co., a North Carolina-based jeweler.
