DURHAM, N.C. - With a seven-goal performance Saturday against Loyola, junior Tewaaraton Trophy nominee Katie Chrest effectively broke the school record for goals in a game while leading the second-ranked Blue Devils to a 14-10 win over the Greyhounds in Koskinen Stadium. The Hampstead, Md., native netted four of the team's five goals in the first half en route to leading the squad in both points (eight) and ground balls (seven) on the day.
Duke (11-3, 2-1 ACC) also received strong support from Rachel Sanford with three goals and four other Blue Devils with single tallies. Goalie Megan Huether finished the day with an impressive 11-save performance against Loyola's 23 shots.
The Greyhounds (3-8) were led by senior starting goalkeeper Kim Lawton with 20 saves in 55:47 of action, marking the first time in her career that she played more than 30:00. Sydney Greene powered Loyola offensively, netting three goals on seven shots, while Liz Peregoy caused three turnovers to hold down the defensive side of the field.
Chrest opened scoring 3:41 into the first half with an unassisted goal following a shot by Sanford to put the Blue Devils up 1-0. Though Loyola tied the ballgame less than 30 seconds later with a shot by Maura Kenny from Rachel Shuck, Chrest found the back of net again to send Duke up 2-1 with 21:16 to play in the first half. Greene tied it up at 2-2 before Leigh Jester scored on an assist from Jessica Adam to make the score 3-2 for the Blue Devils. The teams traded tallies over the next 12:59 to put the score at a 5-4, Duke, with 3:38 to play; however, Bridget Zingler and Kenny scored to send the teams into halftime with a 6-5 mark in favor of the Greyhounds.
A spirited Blue Devil attack emerged from locker room in the second stanza, as they went on a 6-0 over the course of the first 8:41 of action. Michelle Menser converted on a pass from Chrest to tie the game at 6-6 less than a minute into the period and Katie Laschinger quickly followed suit with a goal off a Kristen Waagbo pass to regain the lead for Duke. Rachel Sanford fired off two-straight goals and Chrest followed with two consecutive tallies of her own over a span of 1:20 to extend the lead to 11-6 with 21:19 to play in the game.
Kate McHarg and Emily Lawrence found the back of the net to bring the score to 11-8, but Sanford and Chrest quickly threw in a goal apiece to squash Loyola's attempt at a comeback late in the second half. Waagbo extended the margin with her lone goal of the game with just under four minutes to play to bring the score to 14-8 before Greene and Shuck snuck in shots during the final 1:13 of action to close out the game with a 14-10 score.
The Blue Devils out-shot Loyola by a 48-23 margin, while holding a 32-23 advantage in ground balls and a 14-12 lead in draw controls.
Duke returns to action Friday, April 22 with a game against ACC newcomer Virginia Tech at 6:00 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium before heading to the ACC Tournament April 29-May 1.
