NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Katie Chrest and Kristen Waagbo scored three goals apiece as the Blue Devils rolled over No. 19 Vanderbilt, 13-4, Thursday evening at the VU Lacrosse Complex. With the win, sixth-ranked Duke improved to 7-2 on the season, while the Commodores dropped to 2-4 in 2005.
Vanderbilt goalie Ashley Bastinelli had an impressive performance in the goal, making 14 saves, including 11 in the first half, to keep her team in the game throughout the first half. Kate Hickman was the leading scorer for the Commodores with two unassisted tallies on the day.
Chrest opened scoring just over three minutes into the game on a free position shot, followed by Hickman six minutes later to tie the score at 1-1. The teams traded goals over the next 4:17 before Duke's Leigh Jester and Chrest found the back of the net to put the Blue Devils up 6-4. Rachel Sanford put in her first of two goals following another Vandy goal to send the teams into halftime with a 5-3 score.
The Blue Devils exploded in the second half, going on a 4-0 run to stretch the lead to 9-3. Waagbo opened the streak with two free position goals within the first 2:15 and Chrest and Sanford followed with a tally apiece. Hickman netted the fourth and final goal for Vanderbilt with less than 20 minutes to play, but Duke continued its scoring prowess with four more goals to close out the game.
The Blue Devils return to action Saturday with a neutral contest against Stanford at Vanderbilt's Lacrosse Complex at noon (1:00 p.m. ET).
