DURHAM, N.C. - Katie Chrest and Kristen Waagbo scored four goals apiece to guide fourth-ranked Duke to a 16-4 victory over visiting Duquesne in women's lacrosse action on Friday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. The game served as the season-opener for both squads.
Duke goalkeeper Megan Huether was outstanding in the net, recording 14 saves against 18 shots while securing a team-high four ground balls. For the Dukes, Sarah Pacini was credited for 12 saves.
After Duquesne claimed a 1-0 lead less than four minutes into the contest on a Krista Mann goal, the Blue Devils closed the first half with nine consecutive goals -- three by Waagbo -- to take a 9-1 advantage at intermission. Chrest's third tally of the game came less than two minutes into the second half before Duquesne ended the 10-goal run as Ginger Flocco found the back of the net at the 25:22 mark.
Chrest then scored at the 22:50 mark to start a 5-0 Duke spurt, pushing the lead to 15-2 on Caroline Cryer's goal from Michelle Menser with 13:44 remaining in the game. Duquesne sandwiched a pair of goals around a Duke score by Katie Laschinger to account for the final margin.
Rachel Sanford added three goals for the Blue Devils and Cryer finished with two goals. Chrest also handed out two assists on the day while Leigh Jester chipped in one goal and one assist. Flocco scored a team-best two goals for Duquesne.
Duquesne will remain in Durham and take on Denver at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Duke while the Blue Devils are next in action on Sunday at 12 noon versus Denver.
