Surf'N Slam Classic ? San Diego, Calif.
? Duke (10-0) will face host San Diego (4-7) in the championship of the Surf'N Slam Classic on Friday, Dec. 30 at 11:00 p.m. (EST). The contest will be played at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego, Calif. The Blue Devils defeated St. John's, 105-57, to advance to the championship, while San Diego knocked off Montana State, 53-48, on Dec. 28.
? Duke and San Diego will meet for the second time in school history as the Blue Devils notched a 64-56 victory over the Toreros on Nov. 26, 1988 in the Downeast Auto Classic in Bangor, Maine.
? San Diego is coached by Cindy Fisher, who is in her first season with the Toreros. USD enters the championship with a 4-7 overall record and has lost four of the last five contests. The Toreros are led by Michelle Augustavo, who is averaging 10.5 points and 3.5 rebounds. She leads the squad with 22 treys and had a team-best 42 points at Clemson on Dec. 11, which is the second-most points scored by a Division I player this season.
? Duke owns an overall record of 3-1 against teams in the West Coast Conference in school history-- Loyola Marymount (1-0), Pepperdine (1-0), San Diego (10) and San Francisco (0-1).
? The Blue Devils reached the 100-point plateau for the fourth time this season on Wednesday against St. John's (105) and are now averaging 101.5 points over the last four contests.
? Duke shot 56.9 percent from the field versus St. John's and have now shot 50.0 percent or better in four straight contests and eight of 10 games. On the season, the Blue Devils are hitting 54.2 percent from the field.
? In the St. John's contest on Wednesday, Duke tied a school record with 13 three-pointers and has now hit 25 treys over the last two games combined. The team is hitting 44.2 percent from downtown on the season and has hit 25-of-the-last-44 attempts (56.8%).
? The Blue Devils had 55 points off the bench against St. John's on Wednesday led by Chante Black (16), Jessica Foley (14) and Laura Kurz (13). Black tied a career high with 16 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds and two blocks. Foley registered three treys in the first half and went on to finish with four for the game out of five attempts. Kurz added 13 points on 3-of-4 from behind the arc.
? Senior Monique Currie needs seven points to become only the sixth player in school history to reach the 1,700-point mark. She enters the San Diego game with 1,693. She needs 19 points to move into a tie for fifth on the list with Iciss Tillis (1,712).
? Freshman Carrem Gay returned to action after missing two games with a shoulder injury. She finished with three rebounds, one assist and one steal in eight minutes in the second half after not playing in the first 20 minutes.
? Duke continues to roll in the month of December winning its 26th straight game in the month. Overall, Duke owns an 85-10 record in the 14 years under Gail Goestenkors.
? The 10-0 record to start the season is the second-longest streak under Head Coach Gail Goestenkors and the third longest in school history. In 2002-03, the Blue Devils opened the season with a 20-0 record and in 1987-88 started with a 12-0 mark.
? For only the second time this season, Duke had six players reach the double-figure scoring mark in one game against St. John's on Wednesday-- Mistie Williams (13), Monique Currie (15), Alison Bales (11), Chante Black (16), Laura Kurz (13) and Jessica Foley (14). The other game was Fairfield on Nov. 22.
? Duke will return home on New Year's Eve and then will host Wake Forest in the ACC opener on Jan. 2 at 11:00 a.m. It will begin a very busy month for the Blue Devils where Duke will play 10 games in January. Duke is the only team in the ACC who has to play 10 games in the month.
