Wallace Wade coached the Duke teams to 110 wins against only 36 defeats and seven ties. Prior to coming to Duke he coached at Alabama and his lifetime record of 171-49-10 ranks him amongst college coaches for most wins.
Wade is credited with elevating the Blue Devil gridiron program with obscurity to national prestige. He coached two Duke and three Alabama teams in the Rose Bowl. Wade's 1938 team went undefeated, untied and unscored upon during the regular season before dropping a last second loss to Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl, 7-3.
Wade left Duke in 1950 to become commissioner of the Southern Conference.
