AUBURN, ALA. ? After day one of the Derby Invitational, the top-ranked Duke Women's Golf team sits tied for second as the Blue Devils turned in a day one total of 294 at the 6,270-Yard, Par 72 Auburn University Club.
Auburn, the host of the invitational, holds a three-shot lead with an 18-hole total of 291 followed by Georgia (294), Duke (294), Virginia (297), Tennessee (297), Mississippi (300), South Carolina (301), Florida (302), Florida State (303), Louisiana State (308) and Texas (308) in the top 10.
“The tournament is being played on Bermuda greens so they are a little unusual for us,” said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. “The greens were a little bumpy and unpredictable. We feel good about where we are and are in position to make a move over the next couple of days.”
Blue Devil senior Liz Janangelo continued her hot play with an one-under-par, 71, on Friday and is tied for second in the individual action. Janangelo, a product of West Hartford, Conn., connected on four birdies in the morning. Janangelo is coming off shooting 11-under-par at the Stanford Pepsi Intercollegiate in her last tournament. Leading the individual action, is Auburn's Maru Martinez with a three-under-par, 69.
Fueled by a hole-in-one on the par-three second hole, junior Anna Grzebien is tied for fourth with an even par 72. The Narragansett, R.I., product used holed out on the 154-yard par-three for her first hole-in-one of her collegiate career. She is tied for tied fourth in the individual action as she posted one birdie on the day.
After collecting nine straight rounds of even or under par to start her collegiate career, freshman Amanda Blumenherst tallied a 75 on day one and is tied for 19th. Blumenherst, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., notched four birdies on the afternoon, but five bogeys and a double-bogey on the par-three 17th led to her three-over-par score.
Duke's Jennifer Pandolfi and Jennie Lee each finished with rounds of 76 on Friday and are tied for 34th.
The Blue Devils will tee off on Saturday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. This will mark the third time in school history that the Blue Devils will play in the Derby Invitational as Duke finished tied for fourth in 2001 and 2002.
