AUBURN, ALA. ? The No. 1 ranked Duke Women's Golf team carded a team-best round of 294 on Saturday and went from three strokes down to leading by five at the Derby Invitational on the 6,270-Yard, Par 72 Auburn University Club.
The Blue Devils own a two-day total of 588 and lead host Auburn by five strokes, while Tennessee (594), Georgia (599), Virginia (603), Florida (604), Alabama (610), South Carolina (611), Texas (615), Louisiana State (618) and Oklahoma State (618) finished off the top-10.
With 18 holes remaining, Duke is primed to win its fourth consecutive tournament to start the 2005-06 campaign. The Blue Devils own four golfers in the top-nine of the individual play after Saturday's action.
Leading the Duke charge on Saturday was sophomore Jennifer Pandolfi, who registered a season-best round of one-under-par, 71. A product of Navarre, Fla., Pandolfi notched a team-best six birdies on the day, including four over a span of seven holes on the back nine. With her play she is tied for fifth with a 36-hole total of 147.
Junior Anna Grzebien continued her excellent play and is tied for second in the individual action with a two-day total of 145. Grzebien, from Narragansett, R.I., carded a one-over-par 73 today and sits four shots off the individual leader, Maria Martinez of Auburn (141).
“I've been able to do the same thing both days,” said Grzebien. “I haven't played great and it's difficult to make a birdie, but I can't complain. I just need to stay consistent and make more putts. As a team, we haven't played as good as we can. The more we play the course the better we get, so we just need to keep it together.”
Freshman Amanda Blumenherst is tied for ninth with a two-day total of 148, after totaling a one-over-par round of 73 on Saturday morning. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native notched three birdies on the day but two birdies each on the front and back nine led to her total.
After posting a one-under-par, 71, on day one, senior Liz Janangelo shot a 77 on Saturday and is now tied for ninth. Janangelo started off with three consecutive pars before collecting a birdie on hole four. A product of West Hartford, Conn., Janangelo then bogied the next two holes and went on to notch four straight pars. She birdied the par-four 13th to cut her score to one-over-par, but two double-bogey's in a row on No. 15 and No. 16 to go along with two pars to closed out her round with a 77.
Freshman Jennie Lee concluded her second round with a 79 and is tied for 41st with a two-day total of 155.
The Blue Devils will tee off on Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
