DURHAM, N.C. ? The No. 1 Duke women's cross country team looks to make history Monday, as it seeks to cap off a successful year with its first-ever national championship crown at the 2005 NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. Led by then junior Sally Meyerhoff, the Blue Devils finished as the runner-up in the 2004 national championship race, garnering 144 points.
This year, Duke has used its deepest team to win every race it has competed in without tallying more than 33 points. After starting the season off with a win at the San Diego Invitational with a perfect 15 points, the Blue Devils, led by six seniors, have pushed themselves to earning the Duke women's cross country program's first No. 1 ranking and second ACC and Southeast Regional titles.
At the ACC Championships, the Blue Devils piled up both Duke and ACC records. With five scorers in the top seven and seven runners in the top 11, Duke matched the meet record for the lowest point total recorded with 20. Against six nationally ranked teams at the ACC meet, the Blue Devils also blew away their competition, setting another meet record for the widest margin of victory over second-place N.C. State, who finished with 91 points. Duke's seven runners to make the All-Conference team was an all-time ACC best. Senior Shannon Rowbury claimed the individual title, trailed by classmate Clara Horowitz by only two seconds. Freshman Whitney Anderson was tabbed the ACC Freshman of the Year as the first rookie to cross the line in fourth place.
Rowbury and Horowitz once again teamed up to finish 1-2 at the Southeast Regional, something they have done in every race this year, with Rowbury earning a 13-second lead over the first non-Duke harrier. Six Blue Devils finished in the top 17 to secure spots on the All-Southeast Region team while Duke defeated N.C. State again, 33-78.
Six senior Blue Devils and one freshman will compete Monday, as Anderson, Horowitz, Rowbury and Sally Meyerhoff, Natasha Roetter, Laura Stanley and Elizabeth Wort make their run at an NCAA title. Graduate student Kelly Fillnow will travel as an alternate. The 31-team race, hosted by Indiana State, will begin at 1:15 p.m. in Terre Haute, Ind.
