DURHAM, N.C. ? Caitlin Howe, who is one of the most decorated high school players to come out of the state of New York, has announced she will graduate in December from Duke University, after having a high school and college career filled with injuries.
Howe, who was going to be a student assistant coach for the Blue Devils in 2005-06, has decided she would take the next step in her life and return home to Rochester, N.Y. She will receive a degree in Cultural Anthropology and currently owns a grade-point-average of 3.703. Howe is a three-time member of the ACC Honor Roll.
“I could have graduated this past August if had I taken some classes over the summer, but I had gone to summer school every year so I decided to come back for my senior season,” said Howe. “I wanted to learn a little about coaching and on the administrative side.”
Howe suffered three torn anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL) over her high school and college career requiring her to miss an extended amount of games. She played in 27 career contests as a Blue Devil averaging 2.7 points per contest.
“I want to spend some time at home before I have to find a real job,” said Howe. “My career at Duke didn't turn out how I had planned, but I have learned a lot and I am glad I chose Duke, especially for the academic part of it just because I haven't been healthy for my athletic career. I feel like I am leaving Duke with a great education, a lot of good experiences and met a lot of excellent people. I am pretty excited to be a college graduate and I cannot believe that it has finally come.”
Over her high school career at Fairport, Howe collected 2,001 points, 704 rebounds, 454 assists and 406 steals, while hitting 237 three-pointers and scoring a career-best 39 points in a game. She began playing on the varsity team as a seventh grader.
