Senior guard J.J. Redick scored 18 points to lead top-ranked Duke to a 93-40 victory over visiting Seton Hall in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off on Wednesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils improve to 2-0 with the win while the Pirates fall to 1-1.
The Blue Devils, who captured Preseason NIT titles in 1985 and 2000, advance to next Wednesday's semifinal round at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y., and face the winner of Thursday's game between Sam Houston State and Drexel. Duke's next game will come on Saturday afternoon as the Blue Devils host Davidson at 5 p.m.
Duke dominated from the outset as Seton Hall made one of its first 22 field goal attempts and finished the first half with four baskets in 31 tries while trailing, 43-13. Redick led the way in the opening 20 minutes by connecting on four-of-five three-pointers while scoring 16 points.
After trailing 2-1, Duke scored the game's next 15 points as Redick scored eight points and DeMarcus Nelson's alley-oop dunk from Sean Dockery put the Blue Devils ahead 16-2 with 12:24 remaining in the half. Duke first pushed the lead to 30 points at 41-11 on a three-pointer by Lee Melchionni at the 1:23 mark, and Nelson's layup with six seconds prior to intermission made the score 43-13 at the break.
A 20-7 spurt to begin the second half gave the Blue Devils a 45-point cushion at 65-20 when Nelson buried a three-pointer with 12:35 left in the contest. The lead reached a high of 54 points on three occasions.
Redick connected on six-of-11 field goal attempts and pulled down four rebounds in his 27 minutes on the floor. Nelson came off the bench to score 16 points while Greg Paulus had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Dockery finished the night with a career-best seven assists and Shelden Williams, who played just 16 minutes, hauled in a game-high eight rebounds while blocking his 288th career shot to move into a tie for ninth place on the ACC's career list.
The Duke defense limited Seton Hall's Kelly Whitney to just one point by holding the senior forward without a field goal in 10 attempts. On Monday night, Whitney guided the Pirates to a 14-point win over Manhattan with 25 points. Brian Laing scored a team-high 11 points for the Pirates, who host Marist on Saturday at 1 p.m.
