DURHAM, N.C. - J.J. Redick scored 29 points and Shelden Williams added a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds as top-ranked Duke defeated Davidson by an 84-55 count on Saturday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils improve to 3-0 with the win while the Wildcats fall to 0-1.
Duke travels to New York, N.Y., to meet Drexel in the semifinals of the Preseason NIT on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Davidson hosts Massachusetts on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Duke opened up a 41-26 lead at intermission as Redick scored 19 points with three three-pointers. A three-point basket by Davidson's Brendan Winters pulled the Wildcats to within 10-9 at the 13:44 mark, but Duke responded with an 11-1 run to take a 21-10 advantage on Williams' dunk with 8:47 remaining. Redick's three-pointer with two seconds left in the half provided the 15-point cushion at intermission. Davidson would get no closer than 14 points in the second stanza.
While Redick tossed in 29 points by making 10-of-18 field goals and all five of his free throws, Williams came one blocked shot away from a triple-double. His nine rejections in the contest matched his career-best effort. Lee Melchionni came off the bench to join his classmates in double figures with 16 points while Sean Dockery logged six assists and five rebounds against just one turnover in 32 minutes of action.
Davidson was led by Ian Johnson's 19 points while Winters tossed in 17.
