DURHAM, N.C. ? The No. 3 Duke field hockey team gave up only its third loss of the year Saturday to second-ranked Maryland, 2-0, at Williams Field. Despite dominating their ACC opponent, 25-8, in shot attempts, the Blue Devils were not able to convert their shots in a game where both teams were battling the elements after a downpour started just before the game and hot sun broke out into the first half.
“I think we need to work on finishing,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “When you out-shoot a team, 25-8, you should be producing on the scoreboard. But we'll work on it this week, and we'll be ready for our next game.”
Maryland jumped out to an early lead, as junior Paula Infante knocked in an unassisted goal at the 5:35 mark. The score would remain 1-0 going into halftime. Duke held the Terps until 2:25 into the second half when Janneke van Leeuwen scored what would be the last goal of the game.
Afterwards, the Duke defense picked it up, limiting the Terps to a total of two shots the entire second period. The Blue Devils had several looks on offense, but weren't able to capitalize in only the first game this season that the team has not scored at least one goal.
Duke led 25-8 in shots and 5-2 in penalty corners. Senior Christy Morgan recorded two saves while playing the entire game in goal.
The Blue Devils return to Williams Field Tuesday to host No. 16 Villanova in what will be the seventh game for Duke against a ranked opponent. The Blue Devils have only played one unranked opponent since the first STX/NFHCA poll was released on Sept. 13, and have tallied a 6-2 record in that time. Duke is 9-3 this season while posting a 2-2 ACC record.
