
Walter Wins First Singles Match but Falls in Round of 32

Tulsa, Okla. - Ludovic Walter won his first match on the first day of the main draw rounds at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tournament in Tulsa, Okla. on Thursday, but was eliminated in the second round.
Walter was awarded the second seed in the tournament and was selected to begin play in the main draw. His first match was against Penn State's Mark Barry. Walter cruised through the match with a victory in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. He moved on to face Matt Bruch of Stanford in the round of 32. Bruch advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win in the first round of the tournament. He made it to the main draw with three wins in the qualifier rounds. The freshman continued his successful play with a straight set victory for the upset over Walter 6-4, 6-2.
Joey Atas also received a spot in the main draw and played his first singles match of the tournament. He faced Robert Searle of Rice and lost in the first round for the second straight tournament 6-3, 6-4.
After losing in the final round of qualifying, Jonathan Stokke still made it into the main draw and took on Devin Mullings of Ohio State. Mullings, the 16th seed in the tournament won 6-3, 6-3 to move on where he would lose to Virginia's Treat Huey in the round of 32.
Atas and Stokke both moved to the consolation bracket with their losses. In his first consolation match, Atas picked up his first singles win of the season with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory against Florida State's Maciek Sykut. He will face Georgia's Strahinja Bobusic on Friday at 9 a.m. Bobusic knocked off Walter in the round of 16 at the Southern Intercollegiates in Athens, Ga. earlier this year. Stokke also picked up a win in the consolation round. He faced Stanford's James Wan and took a 7-5, 6-4 decision to advance. He will face Florida State's Ytai Abougzir in the second round tomorrow at 9 a.m.
In doubles competition, Atas and Stokke suffered their first loss of the season against Boise State's Luke Shields and Thomas Schoeck. The Broncos duo was ranked fourth in the preseason ITA doubles rankings and barely came away with a 9-8 (6) victory over the Blue Devils pair.
The tournament is held in Tulsa, Okla. at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Play will continue on Friday with the third round of singles as well as the second round and quarterfinals for doubles.
