DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke head men's lacrosse coach Mike Pressler announced on Tuesday the appointment of seniors David Evans, Dan Flannery, Bret Thompson and Matt Zash as team captains for the 2006 season.
"These four were selected by their teammates, and I couldn't agree more with the choices," Pressler said. "They have matured into quality young men during their time here at Duke, and their leadership will play a vital role in our success in 2006."
Evans, a native of Bethesda, Md., has started 31 games over the past two seasons as a member of Duke's defensive unit. Last spring, he registered 27 ground balls as the Blue Devils led the ACC ranked third nationally in scoring defense.
Flannery, a Garden City, N.Y., product, begins his final season at Duke with 125 career points on 68 goals and 57 assists. A three-year starter at attack, he had 46 goals and 26 assists in 2005 and earned a spot on the NCAA All-Tournament team.
Thompson, a midfielder from Chevy Chase, Md., has played in every game (48) since arriving on the Duke campus and holds career marks of 23 goals and nine assists.
Zash will serve as a team captain for the second consecutive season. The Massapequa, N.Y., native is a two-time All-America pick having earned honorable mention honors as a sophomore and first team recognition last season. A two-time All-ACC selection and two-time Duke team MVP, Zash has posted career totals of 42 goals and 25 assists while securing 115 ground balls.
Duke is coming off last year's 17-3 campaign as the Blue Devils established an NCAA record for wins in a season, won the ACC regular season crown and advanced to the national championship game.
