Well, 5:30 a.m. wasn't exactly what I had in mind for waking up on our one day off in Hawaii, but I was determined to get as much surfing in as possible seeing as it would be my last chance until Christmas.
I had managed to convince Summer and Carla to join me, my friend from home, Britta, and Erin's brother to drag themselves out of bed for our dawn surfing adventure. So there we all were in the lobby of our hotel at 5:45 a.m., walking out into the pouring rain, thinking about how warm our beds had been just minutes before. In spite of our urges to go back to bed, we loaded up in Britta's van and drove down to the base of Diamond Head, where my friend, Maile, lives.
We met Maile's dad who provided Carla and Summer with boards and walked out to the beach access just yards out away from their front door.
The water was cold and refreshing, but the waves looked small. We strapped on our leashes and paddled the 200-300 yards or so out to the break. The morning turned out to be perfect, the waves picked up, the wind died down and the sunrise over Diamond Head was complimented by two full rainbows spanning the horizon.
Summer and Carla turned out to be really good surfers, both standing up and riding the first couple of waves they caught, and Carla throwing up a shaka or "hang loose" sign every time she stood up, or fell down for that matter. I won't mention the time she tried to walk to the front of her board and fell on her face.
When we all got out of the water a couple of hours later, 5:30 a.m. didn't seem like such a bad idea. We had already had so much fun and there was a whole day left to enjoy. Maile's dad was going home to a nice cup of coffee, James was off to spend time with his family, Britta had a soccer game, and myself, Summer and Carla were off for another surfing adventure--this time in Waikiki with Shelly, Ford, Alexis, Straka and Andrea, all of whom proved to be really competent surfers. Even Ford and Shelly, who crashed into each other and then tried to paddle away with each others board.
Overall, it was a great trip and it was nice to be at home with my family, friends and show my teammates where I am from!
