Ogilvie Finishes Second at HP Classic

Former Duke standout Joe Ogilvie recorded the best finish of his PGA career with a second-place finish at the HP Classic in New Orleans, La., on Monday. Ogilvie carded a final-round 68 to finish with a 21-under par 66-67-66-68=267 and tie with 2004 Masters champion Phil Mickelson in second place. Ogilvie and Mickelson finished one stroke behind Vijay Singh, who rallied with a 29 on the back nine and a birdie on the last hole to win the title. Singh finished with a 63 on the day and a four-round total of 266.

It was Singh's third victory of the season, making him the first three-time winner on the tour and giving him the $918,000 first-place share of the $5.1 million purse. Ogilvie and Mickelson won $448,800 apiece.

Singh fired a 9-under 63 with five birdies and an eagle on the back nine. He tied Ogilvie with an eagle on the treacherous 15th hole, an island hole with sand traps on two sides. He won it with a 26-foot putt for a birdie on 18.

Mickelson, playing in his first tournament since winning the Masters, was tied for second going into the final round. Playing in the same group as Ogilvie, Mickelson made his move on the final holes, with birdies on 15, 16, and 18 for a 6-under 68. His birdie on 18 tied him for second with Ogilvie.

Ogilvie moved up to the PGA Tour for the second time this year. His best previous finish was a tie for fourth at the 2000 Fed Ex Classic.

Ogilvie's putter, which got him the lead earlier in the week, wasn't as dependable on Monday. Ogilvie made 93 percent of his putts from four to eight feet in the first three rounds, but on Monday he missed birdies on 14 and 15 with putts.

Ogilvie's blast out of the sand trap stopped inches from the cup, instead of dropping in for a birdie that would have tied him with Singh and forced a playoff.

The final round was pushed back to Monday because of rain delays.
