SAN JUAN PUERTO, RICO-- After two rounds at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, the top-ranked Duke women's golf team leads by 11 strokes over Oklahoma at the Par 72, 6,016-yard Dorado Del Mar Country Club.
The Blue Devils fired a team-best round of 293 on Monday and currently owns a two-day total of 578, which leads Oklahoma (589), Georgia (591), Southern California (594), Tulsa (600), Wake Forest (605), Auburn (607), Tulane (611), Florida (615), Michigan (622), Texas (624), Missouri (628), Kent State (634), Purdue (635) and Penn State (646).
"Overall, we were not as sharp out there today," said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. "We are going to have to stay focused and be on our toes on Tuesday to maintain our lead."
Sophomore Liz Janangelo moved her way into the lead for the individual competition as the West Hartford, Conn., product carded a two-under-par 70 on day two. Janangelo (142) leads the individual play by two strokes over Southern California's Veronica Felibert and Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn (144). Nirapathpongporn led the individual action by four strokes after day one but struggled Monday to finish with a 78.
In the fall, Janangelo won one individual title and shared two others out of five tournaments.
"Liz took advantage of her ability to hit the ball a long way today," said Brooks. "She was hitting it close on her approach shots and rolled the ball well, but her putts were just not dropping."
Freshman Brittany Lang turned in a 71 and is tied for sixth with a 146, while Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh had a 76 and is tied for 15th. Anna Grzebien trimmed two strokes off her day one score to post a 76 on Monday, but is tied for 36th in the individual race. Playing as an individual, senior Leigh Anne Hardin registered her second straight 74 and is tied for 15th with a 146.
Duke will tee off beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday in the final round.
