Four members of the Duke men's tennis team -- Stephen Amritraj, Christopher Brown, Ned Samuelson and Peter Shults -- represented the program in a pair of tournaments this weekend in Texas.
At the USTA Futures event in Arlington, Texas, Amritraj defeated 10th-seeded David Corrie of Great Britain in the opening round of qualifying action before suffering a three-set loss to Devin Mullins of the Bahamas (6-3, 6-7, 6-4).
In addition, Duke's Ludovic Walter received a wild card entry into the tournament's main draw later in the week. Walter will compete as an amateur in the $15,000 event.
Brown, Samuelson and Shults played in the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas. Samuelson defeated third-seeded Michael Kokta of Baylor (6-4, 6-2) while falling to Sheeva Parbhu of Notre Dame (6-4, 6-4) and Scott Doerner of Pepperdine (6-1, 7-6).
Shults sandwiched a victory over Matt Loucks of Portland (7-6, 6-2) in between losses to second-seeded Benjamin Kohlloeffell of UCLA (6-3, 6-3) and Callum Beale of Texas (6-4, 6-1). Brown was upended by Beale (6-4, 6-4) and Roman Borvanov of Portland (3-6, 6-3, 6-3). In doubles action, the Duke tandem of Samuelson and Shults defeated Ignacio Melus and Dean Clowen of Lamar (8-5) before losing in a tiebreaker to Beale and Roger Gubser of Texas, 9-8.
