CHAPEL HILL, N.C.. - The Duke swimming and diving team placed eighth at the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Koury Natatorium on the University of North Carolina campus. The Blue Devils were led by freshman Katie Ness for the third consecutive day and the 400 freestyle relay team that broke a 25-year-old school record.
The all-freshman 400 freestyle relay team, featuring Nora Stupp, Alison Sundberg, Julia Lewis and Ness, broke the school record set in 1978 by almost two seconds with a time of 3:29.02. The relay team qualified for the Senior Nationals in April with the fifth place finish.
Ness placed second with a time of 2:00.14 in the 200 butterfly, which qualified her for the senior nationals and was an NCAA B-cut time. She just missed a 22-year-old school record (2:00.03) in the event by eleven-hundredths of a second, set by Nancy Hogshead in 1981. During the ACC Championships, the Worthington, Ohio native set three individual records, was on three school record-setting relay teams and finished second in two events.
During the morning session, Lauren Cornet qualified for the finals in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:18.76. The junior improved her time to 2:17.93 in the finals to finish sixth at the championships. Junior Katie Fay qualified for the finals in the 200 backstroke and improved her time by almost a second (2:02.86) during the evening session.
Lauren Hancock and Amy Halligan qualified for the 200 butterfly finals as they swam 2:03.68 and 2:03.94, respectively. Hancock finished the night in 13th place and improved her time to 2:03.16 while Halligan finished in 15th at the ACC Championships.
Virginia won the 2003 Women's ACC Championships with 710 points. North Carolina followed with 609 points, Florida State (third, 557), Maryland (fourth, 538), Clemson (fifth, 339), Georgia Tech (sixth, 259), N.C. State (seventh, 241) and Duke (eighth, 230).
The Blue Devil men's swimming and diving team will compete at the ACC Men's Championships next Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 27-March 1. Several members of the women's squad will continue their season as they participate at the NCAA Championships to be held from March 20-22 at Auburn University.
