DURHAM,N.C. - The South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Duke University men's soccer team, 3-0, on Sunday in the championship of the Duke/Adidas Soccer Classic at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. The Gamecocks improve to 4-0 on the season, while the Blue Devils fall to 2-1-1.
Duke was able to outshoot South Carolina, 11-6, on Sunday but the Gamecocks were able to capitalize on their opportunities as three different players registered goals.
Anthony Stovall came off the bench in the first half to add South Carolina's first goal at the 35:22 mark and then Jordan Quinn notched another goal less than two minutes later to give the Gamecocks a 2-0 halftime advantage. Josh Alcala then notched in his first goal of the season to give South Carolina the 3-0 lead.
In the second game on Sunday, N.C. State defeated George Washington, 3-1, to finish as the runner-up for the Duke/Adidas Soccer Classic. The Wolfpack picked up goals by Michael Karim, Kyle Fragakis and Bryant Salter, while George Washington's goal was scored by Matthew Osborne.
N.C. State improved to 1-3, while George Washington fell to 2-2.
For the tournament, South Carolina was the team champion and Quinn was named Most Valuable Player. Members of the All-Tournament team include: Donald McIntosh (Duke), Jordan Cila (Duke), Matt Ahumada (Duke), Michael Bachmeyer (USC), Jack Cummings (USC), Jordan Smith (USC), Derek Biss (GW), Arnar Johannsson (GW), Mitchell Watson (NCSU), Marcus Johnson (NCSU) and Justin Branch (NCSU).
Duke will next take host Clemson on Saturday, September 14 at 7:00 PM. The match will be played at Koskinen Stadium and will mark the ACC opener for the Blue Devils.
