ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Duke sophomore right-hander Colin Begley pitched 6.2 solid innings in his first start of the season against No. 1 Florida State and the Blue Devils took an early 5-0 lead, but Duke was unable to hold on as the Seminoles escaped with a 10-7 victory Wednesday afternoon in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at Florida Power Park.
"I thought we did a great job offensively, coming out, hitting the ball, putting five on the board and immediately putting pressure on them," Duke head coach Bill Hillier said. "I thought Colin did a great job. In a situation like that where you've got the No. 1 team in the country in their home state, he did an unbelievable job. He gave us a chance to win the ballgame. I'm happy with the way my guys competed."
Duke jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning against the top-ranked Seminoles, sending 10 batters to the plate and chasing FSU starter Robby Read. With one out, senior shortstop Kevin Kelly started things off with a walk. Junior first baseman Larry Broadway hit a single to right-center, sending Kelly to third. Freshman designated hitter Tim Layden smacked a single to right-center, sending Kelly home with the first run of the game and advancing Broadway to third. Broadway scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore second baseman Bryan Smith. Layden stole second and, after junior catcher Troy Caradonna walked, freshman third baseman Grant Stanley continued his hot tournament hitting with a two-run double to center field. After Trent Peterson entered the game in relief of Read, junior center fielder Doug Bechtold lined a double to left field, scoring Stanley with the Blue Devils' fifth run of the inning.
Florida State got on the board with one run in third inning. Shortstop Stephen Drew hit a single to right-center and stole second. He scored on a double to right field by left fielder Tony McQuade.
FSU made it a 5-2 game in the fifth on Drew's 12th home run of the year, a solo shot over the right field fence.
The Seminoles evened the game with a three-run seventh inning. Right fielder Mike Futrell led off the inning with a single to left field. With one out, McQuade singled to right field. After Futrell advanced to third on a fly ball, McQuade walked and both runners scored on a two-out single to right by first baseman Jerrod Brown. After junior Brian Patrick came into the game in relief of Begley, catcher Tony Richie evened the game with a single to left field.
FSU had a five-run inning in the eighth, taking a 10-5 lead. Futrell hit a one-out single to center field, stole second and scored on a triple to right field by McQuade. After third baseman Ryan Barthelemy was intentionally walked, designated hitter Blair McCaleb drew a walk. Brown knocked in two runs with a two-out single and Richie followed with a two-run double to left field.
The Blue Devils did not go down quietly, scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Patrick extended his hitting streak to nine games with a two-out single up the middle, scoring Bechtold and Drew Jerdan, who hit back-to-back singles.
Begley pitched 6.2 innings, scattering five runs on nine hits and three walks in his first start of the season and the second of his career, but got a no-decision. Patrick (2-4) took the loss, giving up five runs in 1.0 inning. Trent Peterson allowed just three hits in 7.1 innings of relief to earn the victory for FSU. Daniel Hodges got the final out of the game to pick up his ninth save.
Stanley and Bechtold led Duke with two hits apiece while Richie and McQuade had three hits each for FSU.
Duke (24-33) will face Georgia Tech (44-13) Thursday at 10 a.m. in an elimination game. Florida State (53-12) will take on Clemson (45-12) at 5:00 p.m.
