In the first game, North Carolina (7-2, 2-0 ACC) wasted no time, scoring three goals in the first 20 minutes of the contest. Sophomore forward Anne Remy led off for UNC, connecting with a header off a rebound for the score at 12:25. Freshman Kim Patrick added another, off a feed from Lorrie Fair in the 17th minute, while junior forward Meredith Florance at the 19:24 mark, assisted by both Patrick and Fair. Fair scored a goal of her own in the 31st minute, assisted by Beth Sheppard.
After not taking any shots in the first half, the Trojans fired five shots in the second period, but were unable to score as UNC goalkeeper Jenni Branam registered four saves for the game. The Tar Heels added one final goal at the 86:30 mark, when junior forward Raven McDonald took feeds from Remy and Rebekah McDowell for the score.
The Tar Heels outshot the Trojans, 29-5, while taking nine corner kicks to USC's zero. USC keepers Shaelyn Fernandes and Lauren Arase split time in the goal, with Fernandes recording seven saves in the first half, and Arase with four in the second. With the loss, USC dropped to 6-2, 0-0 in the Pac-10.
In the second match of the afternoon, Santa Clara got off to a similar fast start, scoring two goals in the first 12 minutes. Freshman Aly Wagner scored the first Bronco goal at the 9:45 mark, assisted by Nikki Serlenga. Senior forward Mandy Clemens added another less than two minutes later, assisted by Danielle Slaton.
The remainder of the scoring took place in the second half, as Santa Clara scored five more goals in a 14 and a half minute period. Senior Whitney Hollis scored at the 51:24 mark, a Duke own goal occurred at 55:36, Clemens scored her second goal of the day at 58:57, junior Megan Horvath scored at 60:23 and senior Jacqui Little capped it off with a goal at 65:57 to give the Broncos a 7-0 lead.
The Blue Devils (5-5, 0-2 ACC) prevented a shutout; however; as sophomore forward Sarah Pickens scored her first career goal, an unassisted shot, at the 85:02 mark. Fifty-seven seconds later junior Kasey Truman knocked in another Duke goal, off a corner kick from Susan Kraeger.
Santa Clara outshot Duke 23-6, while the teams were nearly even in corner kicks (Duke two, SCU three). Both teams used two goalkeepers as Santa Clara's Crystal Gordon (5 saves, 0 goals) and Alice Gleason (6 saves, 2 goals) each played a half. Duke starting keeper Isis Dallis (7 saves, 4 goals) played until the 57:30 mark, when freshman Tara Walker (3 saves, 3 goals) entered the match.
A team MVP was selected from each school, including USC's Christina Kushnir, UNC's Lindsay Stoecker, Santa Clara's Kylie Bivens and Duke's Truman.
After hosting opponents from the West Coast this weekend, the Blue Devils themselves head west next weekend, competing in the Golden Gate Classic. Duke plays host San Francisco on Friday, Oct. 1, then heads to Berkeley to play California in the second game of the tournament on Sunday, Oct. 3. Their next home match at Koskinen Stadium is Friday, Oct. 8 versus Davidson.
