#15/11 Blue Devils Host Georgetown on Thursday
The #15/11 ranked Duke Blue Devils (11-1) will host Georgetown
University (7-3) on Thursday to close out their play in the year of
1999. Prior to the start of the Georgetown/Duke game we will be taking
a few moments to recognize senior Peppi Browne for reaching the 1,000
point mark in her career in the game on Tuesday vs. George Mason.
Duke has won the past 10 games in a row and are off to their fourth-best start in the school history. The Blue Devils own an unbelievable 37-3 record at home dating back to the 1997-98 season.
On Georgetown
This will mark the third time Georgetown and Duke will square off when
the two teams meet on Thursday in Durham. Duke leads the overall series
2-0 with both victories coming at neutral sites in 1984 as Duke won
80-68 in Lansing, Mi. and in 1990 Duke won 84-49 in Tampa, Fla. It will
be the first time Duke coach Gail Goestenkors has faced Georgetown since
arriving in Durham, NC in 1992-93.
On the season Georgetown owns a 7-3 record and have won seven of their last eight games (four-game win streak). The Hoyas traveled to George Mason earlier this season and won 82-59.
Junior Katie Smrcka-Duffy has started all 10 games on the season and leads the team with a 20.1 scoring average and leads the team with 18 three-pointers. Danielle Hurley is averaging 11.6 points and 7.3 rebounds. The Hoyas are 4-0 at home and 3-2 on the road. Georgetown is holding opponents to 36% shooting from the field and 20.4 turnovers a game.
Browne Notches 1,000 Points
Senior Peppi Browne reached the 1,000 point mark in the game against
George Mason on Tuesday. Browne hit an 18-foot jumper at the 15:54 mark
in the second half to give her 13 points for the game and 1,001 points
in her four-year career. She became only the 12th Duke player to reach
the 1,000 point mark in her career.
Browne on notching 1,000 points for her career, "I guess it seems like some lofty goal that is far away and now it is here. It's kinda amazing. But other than that I had no idea. None what's so ever."
She is also only five more steals away from 200 for her career. She currently ranks fourth on Duke's career steals list with 195 and needs only 38 more to become the career leader. She also ranks 9th on Duke's career free throw's made list (253) and is approaching 10th place on the career blocked shots list (35) and career assists (218). When Browne notches 200 steals for her career she will be only the third Duke player to record over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists, and 200 steals in a career.
Last Time Out
Georgia Schweitzer scored 15 first-half points en
route to 22 total points in leading Duke to a 95-56 victory against
George Mason Tuesday at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Schweitzer helped build a 39-22 Blue Devil first half lead as she nailed three key three-pointers. She hit back-to-back three-pointers in a 30-second span to put Duke up 18-9 then canned her third three-pointer with 8:55 to go in the first half as the Blue Devils took a commanding 28-13 lead.
Duke led by as many as 34 points midway through the first half and extended its lead to 39 with the final score. Peppi Browne became the 12th player in Duke women's basketball history to go over 1,000 career points with a second-half basket. Browne finished the evening with 14 points on 6-8 shooting and eight rebounds. Duke guard Sheana Mosch scored 13 points, senior Missy West added 12 points and forward Rochelle Parent scored seven points and grabbed nine rebounds.
The Best Start?
Through 12 games on the season Duke is tied for the 2nd best start in
the school history (11-1). The best start was in 1987-88 when the team
got off to a 12-0 start. Both of the 1994-95 and 1995-96 teams began
the season with a 11-1 record and then went on to win the next game to
start 12-1. Then, both teams lost their 14th game of the season to drop
them to 12-2.
If Duke wins on Thursday against Georgetown it will equal the best start in the school history (12-1). The 1995-96 team ended up finishing with a 26-7 record and the 1994-95 team ended the season with a 22-9 record. The longest winning streak for the Blue Devils is 16 games in a row, which happened last season.
Duke in the Rankings
Duke moved up to #11 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 on Monday and #15 in
the Associated Press this week. These rankings are the highest for the
Blue Devils this season. The Blue Devils have now been ranked 44
straight weeks dating back to the 1997-98 season.
Gingrich Gets Start!
Sophomore guard Krista Gingrich received her first career start in the
Sun Splash Shootout, which she started at point guard for the two games
in which the Blue Devils brought home the championship crown.
In her first start she scored a season-high 14 points, had four rebounds, dished out four assists, and had one steal. She hit 4-of-8 shots from the field and 5-of-7 free throws. In the championship game against Liberty, Gingrich started and hit for eight points, had three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. She is averaging 7.3 points a game on the season.
The Home Court Advantage
Duke loves to play at home and their record shows this as they have
recorded an unbelievable 37-3 record in Cameron Indoor Stadium dating
back to the 1997-98 season. In ACC play Duke has won the past 17 games
in a row in Cameron. The last loss came in 1996-97 against Virginia on
Feb. 19 (86-56).
The Blue Devils own the longest current ACC home game winning streak at 17 games. The ACC record for most home ACC wins in a row is 30 by Virginia from January 18, 1992 and ended on January 2, 1996. Duke's win streak dates back to the 1997-98 season in which the Blue Devils were 8-0 at home and in 1998-99 Duke was again 8-0. This season their lone victory has come against Virginia (83-62).
In the eight home games this season Duke is holding opponents to 36% shooting and just 53.7 points a game. As a team Duke is shooting 45% from the field and averaging 78.6 points a game.
Duke in the NCAA/ACC Statistics
The Blue Devils currently rank in five different team categories in the
NCAA statistical rankings through games of Dec. 13. Duke is ninth in
scoring defense (54.3), sixth in scoring margin (21.9), 13th in won-loss
percentage (.889), 12th in free throw percentage (76.0), and 16th in
3-point field goal percentage (40.6).
In the ACC Duke ranks atop five categories: scoring defense, scoring margin, 3-point field goal percentage, free throw percentage, and turnover margin. A listing of all the ACC categories where Duke ranks is listed on page six.
Parent Receives Start vs. GMU
Junior forward Rochelle Parent returned to the starting lineup on
Tuesday against George Mason after missing the Sacramento State game
last Monday in the Sun Splash Shootout and coming off the bench to play
11 minutes in the championship game last week.
She has been hampered with a strained calf for most of the season and will need a long break before it will heel completely.
Parent started the first nine games of the season and is averaging 5.6 points and 5.1 rebounds a game.
Schweitzer Leading the Way
Duke's leading scorer Georgia Schweitzer continued her excellent play
after the Christmas break with 22 points on Tuesday vs. George Mason.
She hit 9-of-13 shots from the field and 3-of-6 from 3-point land. She
has scored 15 or more points in 11 of the Blue Devils 12 games this
season. In five games this season the junior from Columbus, Ohio has
scored 20 or more points.
In eight home games she is averaging 18.6 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.5 rebounds a game.
Schweitzer Honored, Again!
Junior Georgia Schweitzer was named ACC Player of the Week for the
second week in a row on Dec. 6 after leading Duke to a 2-0 record on the
week, including an 83-62 victory over Virginia to open ACC play. For
the week she averaged 20.5 points, 5.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.0
steals. She shot .609% (14-23) from the field and .700 (7-10) from

Virginia Tech. She picked up her first double-double of the season
against #8 Penn State. In the game she posted 10 points, 11 rebounds,
three assists in 33 minutes.
She is currently shooting .50% (15-of-30) from 3-point range to lead the team. Duke's season record for 3-point percentage is .539 by Jenni Kraft in 1988-89.
Coach "G" Records 150th Win
Duke head coach Gail Goestenkors picked up her 150th victory at Duke
University with the 68-59 victory over Vanderbilt University on
11/24/99. In her eighth season she has totaled a 159-69 record.
Duke Wins Sun Splash Shootout
The Blue Devils traveled to Nassau, The Bahamas and brought home the
championship crown as they defeated Sacramento State (81-45) and Liberty
(66-45). Senior Peppi Browne was named Most Valuable Player after
posting her second double-double of the season vs. Liberty (11 points,

Blue Devils Win Duke Classic
Talk about a big game...Well, the Blue Devils came out on Sunday and

contributed to the 63-49 victory over #9/8 Penn State. For the game
junior Georgia Schweitzer led the Blue Devils with a game-high 18
points, with six other players scoring in the victory.
Duke limited the Lady Lions to just 27% shooting from the field and All-Tournament selection Lisa Shepherd to 0-12 shooting from the field. Just the day before Shepherd hit 9-of-11 from the field on her way to a career-high 31 points.
Freshman Sheana Mosch came off the bench and showed why she was selected Preseason ACC Rookie of the Year with 14 points and six rebounds. Senior Lauren Rice notched her first double-double on the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds and senior Peppi Browne added 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Exhibition Games
In the Blue Devils two exhibition games this season, Duke was without

only 10 points at halftime (32-22), but the possible future Olympic team
shot 57% from the field in the second half to pull away and win 71-45.
Browne and West led Duke with 12 points each and Rice added seven
points.
