The Duke women's cross country team was selected as one of 31 teams to compete in the 1999 NCAA Championships held Monday, November 22nd at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. The Blue Devil women were selected for the first-time in the 15-year history of the program. Last year, Megan Sullivan was the first-ever individual cross country runner to earn a bid to compete in the NCAA championships.
Duke men's team was not selected to compete in the championships despite placing fourth in the Southeast Region and finishing second at the ACC championships.
The women took third in the Southeast Region championships at Furman University this weekend. The top two teams in each of the nine regions automatically qualify. The NCAA selects a total of 31 squads (18 automatic qualifiers) to round out its, so the Blue Devils were among teams across the country hoping for one of the 13 at-large bids.
"This means everything for our program," Jan Ogilvie said. "When we took over the program two-and-a-half years ago, we set our goal of getting to the NCAA championships in three years. We met our goals in an unexpected way."
ACC Freshman of the Year Sheela Agrawal led the Blue Devil third place team placing with a 10th place individual finish (17:40 time) followed by junior Megan Sullivan's 12th place finish in 17:43. Sophomore Ellie Culp finished in 34th place (18:21), followed by sophomore Heather Ryan (36th in 18:25), sophomore Ann Wickman (37th in 18:27), sophomore Mandy Woodmansee (70th in 18:58) and sophomore Katie Atlas (123rd in 19:48). Those seven runners will compete in the NCAA championships along with freshman alternate Whitney Evans.
"We ran like champions, gave everything we had and had an outstanding performance on the day that counted most," Ogilvie said. "Megan Sullivan has been running on an ankle that will require surgery after the season's over. We've had some problems with sickness. Our runners put all that behind them and came out with a great day."
Duke will enter the NCAA championships ranked No. 21 in the nation.
DUKE SQUAD DOMINATED BY YOUTH
Of the seven runners competing Monday at the NCAA cross country
championships, six are sophomore status or younger. Five runners are
sophomores, two are freshman and one-Megan Sullivan- is a junior. All
eight runners will return to next year's squad giving Duke one of the
most experienced and talented squads in the nation.
