"Duke deserved to win today; they were the better team," FSU head coach Patrick Baker said. "At half time we talked about going out and trying to score a goal every 15 minutes. When Meredith (Jones) scored that first goal, we found a little bit of momentum. We had some really good chances this afternoon but couldn't capitalize on those chances."
Duke's Sherrill Kester scored her first of two goals at the 15:54 mark after taking a rebounded ball off FSU goalkeeper Jamie Gurtov and knocking it in. Kester then added the second goal at the 29:37 mark off an assist from Rebecca Smith. It marked the third time this season that Kester has scored multiple goals in a game.
The Blue Devils scored the third goal of the game with Kasey Truman adding her unassisted goal at the 39:47 mark to give Duke the 3-0 lead at half time. Florida State freshman Meredith Jones put the Seminoles on the board at the 54:10 mark with a goal off a rebound from Duke goalkeeper Isis Dallis. Florida State held the Blue Devils scoreless in the second half but fell 3-1.
"I have to give credit to Isis Dallis in goal today," Baker said. "She did a fantastic job. We also learned today that we have to play for a full 90 minutes, no question about it. It's just something we're trying to learn this year."
The Blue Devils continue playing on the road, as they travel to UNC Charlotte on Wednesday, Oct. 27 to take on the 49ers in a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
