Former All-ACC linebacker and Duke team captain Brad Sherrod is in his 11th season on the staff and coaches the Blue Devil running backs.
Sherrod, who coached the linebackers during his first nine seasons and the tight ends last season, has been a success on and off the football field with his hard work and determination.
In 2007, Sherrod will direct a running back unit that returns its top five rushers ? Re’quan Boyette, Justin Boyle, Clifford Harris, Ronnie Drummer and Tielor Robinson ? from a season ago. A junior, Boyette led the Blue Devils in rushing yards last year while Boyle, a senior, ranks among the ACC’s active leaders in both career rushing yards (1,057) 10th) and rushing touchdowns (16; 4th).
In 2005, linebacker Michael Tauiliili was a co-recipient of Duke’s Outstanding Defensive Player Award after leading the Blue Devils in total tackles with 92 and 69, respectively. Tauiliili was named first team Freshman All-America and the ACC’s Defensive Freshman of the Year by The Sporting News after leading all rookie linebackers nationally in tackles, tackles for loss (10.0) and caused fumbles (3).
In his initial coaching season at Duke, Sherrod guided senior linebacker Chike Egbuniwe to a team-high 132 tackles and spearheaded the Blue Devils stop force. Egbuniwe went on to participate in NFL camps with Dallas and Carolina.
Sherrod guided the career of Ryan Stallmeyer, who played for the Blue Devils from 1996-99. Stallmeyer was Duke’s leading tackler in his final two seasons and currently ranks eighth on Duke’s career tackles list (348) and 10th on the career tackles for loss chart (27.5).
Also under Sherrod’s tutelage was Ryan Fowler, a two-time Duke captain who made 41 career starts at Duke and earned second team All-ACC honors in 2003. Fowler racked up 495 career tackles ? the third-highest total in Duke history ? while adding 47.5 tackles for loss and 27 double figure tackle games. Currently a member of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, Fowler posted three 100-tackle seasons and was named co-MVP of the 2003 team.
In 2004, Sherrod coached Giuseppe Aguanno, who paced the Blue Devils in tackles with 94 from his middle linebacker slot and earned the Carmen Falcone Award as Duke’s MVP. Aguanno added seven tackles for loss, two sacks and two fumble recoveries on the year while helping the Duke defense rank fourth in the ACC in total takeaways.
The 37-year-old Sherrod returned to Duke after serving as an assistant coach at East Tennessee State in 1996.
Serving as team captain, Sherrod earned second team All-ACC honors as a senior in 1993 when he led the Blue Devils and ranked fifth in the conference in tackles with 113 total stops. The native of Monroe, N.C., tallied 279 stops including 26 tackles for loss in his Duke career from 1989-93.
His playing career began as a member of Duke's 1989 ACC championship team. He played in three games that season before redshirting. For his career, Sherrod played in 47 games with 29 starts.
Sherrod began his coaching career at Massachusetts in 1995 and then helped lead East Tennessee State to the NCAA I-AA playoffs and a 10-3 record in 1996.
As a prep, Sherrod was a two-time all-state and honorable mention All-America pick at Monroe High School. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in history from Duke in 1993.
Sherrod and his wife, Monique, reside in Durham. The couple has one son, Elijah (2), and one daughter, Angelena, born November 29, 2006.
