David Kelly is in his second campaign on the Duke football staff, where he serves as Associate Head Coach while directing the Blue Devil wide receivers. Duke head coach Ted Roof and Kelly served together on the coaching staff at Georgia Tech in 2000 and 2001.
Kelly came to Durham after serving the 2002 and 2003 seasons as the Associate Head Coach at Stanford.
This past spring, Kelly was honored as one of the top college football recruiters in the nation by Rivals.com.
“We’re very excited to have Coach Kelly as a member of our staff,” said Duke head coach Ted Roof. “He’s a great football coach, a great recruiter and more importantly, a fantastic person. Our football program is going to benefit greatly from having David here with us.”
Duke’s top two returning wide receivers for 2005 are senior Ronnie Elliott and sophomore Jomar Wright. Under Kelly’s direction, Elliott led all Duke wide receivers with 28 pass receptions for 318 yards last season while Wright caught 18 balls for 323 yards and a team-leading 17.3 yards per reception average.
In his two seasons at Georgia Tech, Kelly coached the wide receivers and helped the Yellow Jackets to a two-year overall record of 17-8 and back-to-back berths in the Peach and Seattle Bowls. He mentored Kelly Campbell, who finished his career as Georgia Tech’s all-time leader in pass receptions (195), receiving yards (2,907) and touchdown receptions (24). The school’s only three-time All-ACC selection, Campbell plays professionally with the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings and owns career totals of 57 pass receptions for 1,062 yards and eight touchdowns in three complete seasons.
Kelly got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant coach at Furman in 1979-80, with the Paladins posting a 9-1-1 overall mark in 1980 while winning the Southern Conference title. He then served as an assistant coach at Dunwoody (Ga.) High School for three seasons (1981-83) before taking over the head coaching slot for 10 years (1984-93). Kelly amassed a 10-year overall record of 80-36-1 including one state championship (1993) and three region titles. In 1993, he led Dunwoody to a perfect 15-0 ledger, the state crown and a final national ranking of number three from USA Today, and was named Georgia’s coach of the year by the State of Georgia Hall of Fame, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association.
At Dunwoody, Kelly coached offensive lineman Harris Barton, who went on to receive All-ACC honors at North Carolina before being selected in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. A three-time NFL All-Pro selection, Barton, who played from 1987-96, was a member of three world championship teams as the 49ers captured Super Bowl titles in 1989 (20-16 win over Cincinnati), 1990 (55-10 win over Denver) and 1995 (49-26 win over San Diego).
The Union, S.C., native then moved back into the college ranks in 1994, joining the staff at Georgia for two seasons as the running backs coach. While with the Bulldogs, Kelly coached the likes of Robert Edwards, Hines Ward, Terrell Davis and Larry Bowie while helping Georgia to the 1995 Peach Bowl. Kelly then served four years on the staff at Louisiana State, aiding the Tigers’ run to a pair of bowl games (Peach in 1996 & Independence in 1997) while tutoring wide receiver Josh Reed, who just completed his third season (111 career receptions for 1,250 yards and 4 TDs) with the Buffalo Bills, and tight end David LeFleur, a first round draft choice of the Dallas Cowboys in 1997.
All told, Kelly has coached in five bowl games ? 1995 Peach Bowl with Georgia, 1996 Peach Bowl with LSU, 1997 Independence Bowl with LSU, 2000 Peach Bowl with Georgia Tech and 2001 Seattle Bowl with Georgia Tech.
Kelly, born December 29, 1956, graduated from Furman in 1979 with a bachelor of arts degree in education. He earned four letters as a member of the Paladin football squad, playing wide receiver, running back and cornerback during his tenure. During his senior season, Furman went 8-3 and captured the Southern Conference championship. He went on to earn a master’s degree in education from Furman in 1981.
Kelly and his wife, Belinda, have a nine-year old daughter, Brittany.
