Joanne Boyle enters her ninth season on the Duke women's basketball staff as assistant coach. Boyle returned to her alma mater in 1993 after a stint both playing and coaching overseas.
Boyle's main responsibilities with the Blue Devils include recruiting, running the conditioning program, scouting and coaching the perimeter players. Boyle begins her fourth season working with the guards after primarily coaching the post players her first five seasons with the program.
From 1994 to 1997, Boyle helped guide the career of All-ACC forward Tye Hall, who ended her career as the ACC leader in field goal percentage. In 1998, she guided forward Peppi Browne to NCAA All-West Region team honors.
In 1998-99, she coached two All-ACC guards in Nicole Erickson and Hilary Howard. Erickson, who was named to the NCAA Final Four and East Region All-Tournament teams, scored over 1,000 points during her career, while Howard became Duke's all-time assist leader in 1999. In 1999-00, Boyle coached ACC Player of the Year Georgia Schweitzer and All-Freshman Team selections Sheana Mosch and Michele Matyasovsky. Last season, Boyle guided Schweitzer to ACC Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive season, Alana Beard to National Freshman of the Year accolades and Mosch to a third-team All-ACC selection.
A 1985 graduate of Duke University with a degree in economics, Boyle was a four-time letterwinner in the Duke women's basketball program. During her senior season, she captained the Blue Devil team that set then-school records for most wins and most ACC wins in a season. Boyle finished her senior year second on the Duke scoring charts and first in assists. Her 75 steals during the 1984-85 season ranked number one among season-best marks until this past season when Beard broke her mark.
Upon graduation from Duke, Boyle played professionally in Europe for three years. For two seasons, she was the leading scorer of the Luxembourg League before spending her third season in the German Elite Division. She also coached a second division women's basketball team in Europe for two years.
Boyle earned a master's degree in public health from the University of North Carolina in 1989. She is single and resides in Durham, N.C.
