Seth Benson, the 2001 IC4A pole vault champion and Duke record holder both indoors and outdoors, has chosen to give back to Duke University by coaching Blue Devil vaulters even as he works on establishing a separate professional career of his own.
In his first season with the Duke women, Benson, who spent four years vaulting as an undergraduate alongside women’s record holder Jillian Schwartz, helped a pair of Duke women rise to the number two and three positions all-time behind Schwartz. Freshman Laura Chen cleared 11-9.75 indoors before red-shirting outdoors, and sophomore Kristy Howard cleared 11-6 outdoors. Now both return for their sophomore and junior years, respectively, awaiting Benson’s guidance so both can sail over 12 feet and beyond in 2003.
Benson graduated from Duke in 2001 with a degree in Economics. Benson is single and resides in Durham.
