Mitchell was Duke’s top shot-putter in 2002 despite a limited time commitment due to football.Despite not throwing as a freshman, Mitchell heaved a 47-10.50 toss in his very first meet and by season’s end had three of the top five throws for Duke indoors. In football, Mitchell played in all 11 games with four starts in 2001 and was named Duke’s Most Improved Offensive Lineman following 2002 spring practice.
