Duke’s top returnee in cross-country, Williams is also one of the top returnees in the NCAA Southeast Region, coming off his sixth place finish as a sophomore in 2001.Williams got his college career off to a great start in the fall of 2000 when he stepped up big at the ACC Cross-Country Championships, running fourth man for Duke and finishing 12th in the league as just a freshman, helping the Blue Devils to their first ACC title since 1977.He then ran an 8:31.51 for 3,000-meters indoors, the fastest ever for a Duke freshman, but red-shirted the outdoor campaign in 2001.Last fall, Williams ran No. two man for Duke behind Sean Kelly at the NCAA Preview meet, the NCAA Southeast Regional and the NCAAChampionships, all run on the course at Furman in Greenville, S.C.His best 10,000-meters time was 30:35 and his NCAA placing was 88th. Outdoors Williams worked on his speed with races at 1,500 (3:58.36), 3000 (8:28.24, second at the Duke Invitational) and 5,000-meters (14:54.64) in 2002.
