Upcoming Event: Swimming & Diving versus Boston College on September 26, 2025 at 4 p.m. Diving / 5 p.m. Swimming

Josh Stanfield joined the Duke swimming and diving program as an assistant coach in July, 2018. He enters his third season with the Blue Devils.
Stanfield’s second season with Duke was cut short as the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the 2020 NCAA Championships. Prior to the cancellation of the event, 10 Blue Devils were set to compete, thus earning CSCAA All-America honors after the cancellation. Senior Alyssa Marsh led Duke throughout the season, breaking three school records. Freshman diver Ali Watson was the lone Blue Devil on the podium at the ACC Championships, earning All-ACC honors in platform diving. Also, Stanfield helped lead the men’s and women’s teams to the highest rankings each side had received in program history as the women were dubbed ninth in the final CSCAA poll while the mean reached 15th in the November edition. In addition to success in the pool, 26 Blue Devils were named CSCAA Scholar All-Americans.
In his first year with the Blue Devils, Stanfield was part of Duke history as 18 school record times, including nine of the 10 relay events, were broken this season, ten on the women’s side and eight on the men’s. In addition, Stanfield assisted with the development of nine CSCAA All-America honorees: Alyssa Marsh (50-yard freestyle, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 200 medley relay); Hunter Aitchison (200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 200 medley relay); Nathaniel Hernandez (First Team one-meter); Maddie Hess (200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 200 medley relay); Shayna Hollander (200 freestyle); Evan Moretti (one-meter); Halle Morris (200 medley relay) and Melissa Pish (400 freestyle).
Both men’s and women’s programs had their best finishes in years during his first year as an assistant coach as the women finished 5th at the ACC Championships, their highest finish in program history, and 23rd at the NCAA Championships, highest since 2011, while the men’s team finished 29th at the NCAA Championships, its highest since 2014.
Stanfield came to Duke after a successful six-season tenure at Gardner-Webb. He previously served as an assistant coach before being elevated to the role of associate head coach for the 2017-18 campaign. Stanfield was also integral to Gardner-Webb’s recruiting efforts.
During his final year in Boiling Springs, Stanfield oversaw a squad that produced three Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) titles – two in relay events and one individual – and five NCAA ‘B’ cuts. The 2016-17 season was also a strong one for Gardner-Webb under Stanfield’s supervision, resulting in four individual CCSA champions, 10 program records, 16 All-CCSA selections and 41 Academic All-CCSA honorees.
Stanfield’s previous coaching experience includes time as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. At Southwestern, he was part of a coaching staff that helped the Pirates achieve 14 school records, one NCAA qualifier and one conference champion. Stanfield also held an age group coaching position at Texas-based Nitro Swimming, serving as the primary coach for several individual state champions.
A native of Huntsville, Texas, Stanfield graduated from Southwestern in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology.
