Scott Boone joined the Duke coaching staff in March 2024 and serves as an analyst working primarily with the special teams units.

Boone and the special teams played a key role in Duke’s 2025 ACC Championship as the units ranked third nationally in kickoff return average (29.6), 12th in punt return defense (3.8), 16th in net punting (42.0) and 25th in blocked kicks (2). With Boone’s mentorship, Sahmir Hagans earned Second Team All-ACC accolades as a return specialist. Boone also helped the Blue Devils execute fake kicks in three of their final four games as Todd Pelino set up Duke’s game-winning touchdown at North Carolina with a 26-yard run, punter Kade Reynoldson turned in a 26-yard run on a fake punt against Wake Forest and Kevin O’Connor took a direct snap on a fake punt against Virginia in the ACC Championship Game and ran six yards for a first down.

The 2024 season saw Duke’s special teams ranked 11th nationally in blocked kicks (three), 18th in punt return defense (4.5) and 20th in kickoff return average (24.2). Punter Kade Reynoldson was a 247Sports True Freshman All-America Team selection after setting the Duke freshman record for most punting yards (3,285) and tying the mark for punts (75). Reynoldson finished the season ranked tied for second nationally in punts, third in yards and 28th in punting average (43.8). In addition, redshirt freshman Que’Sean Brown was an honorable mention All-ACC choice as a punt returner after recording 24 for 233 yards (9.7).

Boone came to Durham after serving as the Special Teams Coordinator and tight ends coach with the XFL’s San Antonio Brahmas.

Boone got his start in coaching at Wabash College, serving as an assistant coach from 1983-96 as the Little Giants posted an 81-36-2 overall record. He then was the head coach at Randolph-Macon College for seven years from 1997-2003 and guided the Yellow Jackets to a 37-33 ledger with a share of the 1997 Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship.

From 2004-13, Boone served on the staff at the College of William & Mary, coaching on defense including the last three seasons as coordinator. In 2013, he was a finalist for FCS Coordinator of the Year honors after the Tribe ranked No. 2 nationally in scoring defense.

Boone then spent time at Nevada (2014-16; defensive coordinator) and Arizona (2017; linebackers coach) before working one season as an analyst at Wake Forest in 2018. He then served on staffs at North Carolina (2019; special teams coordinator & outside linebackers coach) and NC State (2021; defensive analyst).

Boone’s coaching history includes participation in seven bowl games (2014 New Orleans, 2015 Arizona, 2017 Foster Farms, 2018 Birmingham, 2019 Military, 2021 Holiday and 2024 Gator) along with three NCAA FCS Playoff berths, in 2004, 2009 and 2010.

Boone is a 1981 graduate of Wabash College and was inducted into his alma mater’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990. He earned a master’s degree in higher education administration from Purdue University in 1999.

A native of Veedersburg, Ind., Boone is married to the former Jessica Spadafora and the couple has two sons, James and Nicholas. Boone also has a son, Nathan, and daughter, Delaney.
