Colin Diaz joined the Duke coaching staff in February 2024 and serves as an analyst working primarily with the safeties.Â
The 2025 campaign had transfer Caleb Weaver lead Duke in tackles during his one year with the program as he booked 91. Weaver, who had not been a safety until his arrival in Durham, finished 10th in the ACC in total tackles and added two interceptions. Weaver started alongside DaShawn Stone, who booked 86 tackles, two interceptions, one caused fumble, three pass breakups and one quarterback pressure. Stone finished third on the squad in tackles and 14th in the ACC.Â
Duke’s safeties excelled during Diaz’s first year in Durham as Terry Moore was a Second Team All-ACC selection and a Second Team All-America pick by Action Network.Â
Prior to arriving in Durham, Diaz spent one season (2023) with the defensive staff at Florida International University. While with the Panthers, Diaz worked with the cornerbacks and helped the defense rank 29th nationally in defensive touchdowns (2), 42nd in tackles for loss per game (6.0) and 51st in red zone defense (.818).Â
Before his time with FIU, Diaz served two years (2021-22) as a graduate assistant at Rice University, working with the safeties. In 2021, Diaz mentored Naeem Smith to Honorable Mention All-Conference USA honors after he led the team and was second in the league with four interceptions, marking the most by a Rice player since 2018. The following year in 2022, Diaz helped the defense rank No. 20 nationally in fumbles recovered (11) and No. 38 in passing yards allowed (208.6).
Prior to entering the coaching ranks full time, Diaz served one season (2020) as a sales representative with the Miami Heat.
A native of Miami, Fla., Diaz graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in sports management in 2019. While working toward his degree, Diaz served as a student assistant coach at Florida A&M University for one season (2018), working with the linebackers.
